#Oilseed rape (#OSR, Canola oil) is an important oil crop, but cultivation is #pesticide
intensive.

We inoculated plants with beneficial fungus Beauveria bassiana to see if it can protect them from pests.

Short answer: We had c. 30% success with endophytic colonisation and the colonised plants showed interesting metabolite developments but they still got eaten by the pests.

Pretty quiet on the trapline this afternoon, just a ship rat and (weirdly) a mouse in a DOC200.

I installed the first Steve Allen SA2 trap as well. First time I've used these but I've heard very good things. Unfortunately the ramp had a knot in the middle and snapped in half when I was installing it so it's a bit short. #Trapping #PestControl #Conservation

This mature male stoat was caught during August 2022 in the Stables Wetland (near the main entrance to Queen Elizabeth Park), across the highway from Whareroa Farm.

He weighed in at 464 grams; the NZ average is 325g.

Great to have this one out of the gene pool!

Our previous champion was 437g caught at the Paekākāriki quarry in February 2020.

3rd equal at 395g are currently numbers 12 caught 18 November 2014 and no.105 caught 6 July 2019, both at Whareroa Farm Reserve. #PestControl

@SpeciesOfSubstance Yes, keeping biological matters from being eaten or rotting is tricky, and using highly toxic stuff was sensible at that time.
Without our current knowledge of #PestControl and climate control technology, we'd still need to rely on a lot of nasty stuff.

#PestControl is scheduled to come spray the place, in about 15 minutes. So I have to evacuate for a couple of hours. That means mall time. 🏬🚶🏻‍♀️

I hope they show up on time... unlike last month when they were about an hour late. 🙄
