Finally, my defense will be on September 29th. The last months of the Phd , where very harsh, between writing the thesis, articles and other personal factors that affected negatively it was a really dark time. But now I am glad that the evaluation was very positive c:
The comment on the good english gave so much joy, it is something that through my PhD sometimes was criticised rightfully, but other times felt like they were just nitpicking

Today I felt very sad, and lost. I am not so sure that what I'm currently doing - a PhD in complex systems - will be worthwhile.

I'm a bioinformatician (or well, I'd like to become one), but my mentors are not. I very often explain basic programming concepts to them.

I chose this laboratory mostly for love, as my bf has to stay here for work, and also because the people are pretty cool and chill.

[📢 #phd] I had a little bit of fun this afternoon training #HTR models on the Lucien Peraire's archives. I even go to try out @wouter_haverals's CERberus to test my models' predictions. Inevitably, I wrote a new blog post about it!

Since Peraire's archives have two ensembles of very different documents in French (same handwriting but different writing tools), I tested how good a model can be when trained only on one of the ensembles and vice-versa. I got really excited by the results because one of my models just completely lost it on the unseen writing tool 😋

What can I help with?

I’m doing a PhD without an academic background, so have had to build up my knowledge management system and study skills from scratch (and I know a thing or three about economic barriers & imposter syndrome). Happy to share my learning with any other PhD newbies (or greybeards!).

Practice research is a tricky beast and I’m helping to chair our university research group, where we’re trying to define frameworks and a language that can be understood between artists and more ‘canonical’ or empirical researchers, to build trust and support.

I also have ADHD and was recently diagnosed, which makes PhD study both incredible and difficult in equal measure. Happy to chat to anyone grappling with ND in academia.
