Is anyone here headed to Santa Fe for the Rocky Mountain American Society for Aesthetics conference this coming Friday to Sunday? I will be presenting on an invited symposium on queer aesthetics hosted by Ley Cray, along with Nicholas Whittaker and Bailey Szustak. Ley had wondered in a review of my book Uncommon Sense about what Benthamist utilitarianism might say about sex work and sadism, and I live to satisfy curiosity.

I've been reflecting on some of the early #philosophy I studied as a teenager, Sartre and his Existentialism is a Humanism.

His core idea, Existence Precedes Essence, was an inversion of the normal way of seeing things. It strikes me that in our time where popular understanding of the self has been so completely dominated by medicalised and scientistic schemas, his formulation ("man first of all exists, encounters himself, surges up in the world – and defines himself afterwards") is completely at odds with what is now common sense, perhaps more so than it was before.

Most people are essentialists, though they disagree on what is essential!

I recommend reading his _Automatic Society_ book first, which is a good intro. It's about what automation does to society and what happens to the notion of #work Vs #labour.
