After several papers positing a post-K/Pg origin for primates (contrary to what's shown in PALEOCENE), a new methodology shows primates originating in the Cretaceous! Whew! doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2023.06.

I am shaken to learn that four species of in eastern North America are not even close to monophyletic. This raises so many questions! The size range is absurd — the smallest “Painted” are 6’ / 2 m and the largest “Yellow” are 177’ / 54’ — so is the gigantism limited to one clade or did it evolve multiple times? How does this line up with geography?

I may previously have mentioned that there is an arachnologist named Gustavo Hormiga, which confuses me to no end as "hormiga" is Spanish for "ant" and I always, always instinctively first think he is a myrmecologist.

Anyway, this paper came up in my Google Scholar alerts: doi.org/10.1016/j.ympev.2023.1 :ClosedAccess: and I was like, oh, cool, a new phylogeny of Symphytognathoidea, and got to "the phylogenetic hypothesis proposed using morphology to obtain the…Anterior Tracheal System (ANTS) Clade" and groaned out loud "okay please stop"

Two unexpected cladoceran systergroups--Oligopoda and Magipoda--have shuffled the cladoceran orders according to Van Damme et al (2022). I certainly did not get this topology in my thesis . . .

With the progress in high quality genome assemblies and in bioinformatics of comparative genomics, it seems that we're going to see increasing resolution of tough points of animal phylogeny: "Ancient gene linkages support ctenophores as sister to other animals" nature.com/articles/s41586-023

Sigh, my first love. The maples.

Still largely unworked although there's now data out there from both the nucleus and chloroplast.

: The red and silver maples (sect. Rubra) are a deep diverging bunch, with a sister they forgot in Japan and a cousin that is the only maple ever to penetrate the tropics.

Morphologically, a type that once was pretty much everywhere maples ever have been. A very old and outdated pic.

A great deal of work and working with some really tiny critters so hard to get good but some great first insights into these dangerous invisibles journals.plos.org/plosntds/art
Working on this was particularly interesting given the uncertainties and how things jumped around so much depending on which were used.

Yay, now out, the final installment of the Zahiri et al Noctuoidea papers, the last family Euteliidae! Very happy to see this, and a huge thanks to Reza for persisting with this. In addition, I am humbled and honoured to have a genus named after me, Niklastelia 🤗

-Update to ecoevo.social/@grimmiges/11010

Interesting leap in faith: The same clique of authors putting out a preprint claiming all modern-day Fagales genera are younger than 25-20 Ma pop up in the author list of a study just submitted to a high-tier journal indulging in how only the Fagaceae bunch hybridised already in the Eocene (>40 Ma).

Using the fossil record again, but this time without any palaeobotanist in the author list.

Normally wouldn't link any tweet but Annals of Botany really did a nice thread on our last paper. Pure applied in science: NGS SNP , FBD dating using a score of , and chipping in some (cleaned) distribution data for and zone mapping.
