#Pinetta by @dragfyre started prototyping that https://codeberg.org/pinetta/proto-pinetta
And #SocialHome by @jaywink has a pinboard like UI https://gitlab.com/jaywink/socialhome
Been trying to move forward with adding pins to #Pinetta. @amthecoat has been great, getting #devOps set up as we transition over to postgres. Only trouble is my potato computer won't build a usable version of compose đ oh well, we'll get this eventually. I do have #postgres installed on its own on the box... shouldn't it be possible to set things up to use that instead of running it in a container? đ¤
Anyway. Headlines are headlines, and to be honest, I stopped chasing them long ago. The real talk happens person-to-person, heart-to-heart. As we witness the growth of the #Fediverse, I wonder whether we're creating spaces where that kind of genuine human communication can happen.
It is happening, offline and on. As much as possible, I try to contribute to that. I guess I wonder whether #Pinetta will be part of that, eventually. I hope so, but it depends on the community that gathers around it.
And as a little post-script to this thread, if #Pinetta sounds interesting to you and you liked what you read above, please feel free to follow @pinetta, star its repo on @Codeberg (https://codeberg.org/pinetta/proto-pinetta/issues) â, and join its matrix space: https://matrix.to/#/#pinetta-space:matrix.org đŹ â¤ď¸
Anyway, tl;dr (and pardon the digression?):
#Pinetta's not dead! As the pet shop owner said, "it's just resting".
Personally I'd love to hear from like-minded people who think they could either contribute or make connections with experienced people on this. People who can work with #Python and #Django for the prototype, people who know #CommunityBuilding and #TrustAndSafety. And, in the end, if it's meant to happen, it will happen, and we can stop making jokes about it being vaporware.
#TrustAndSafety #communitybuilding #django #python #Pinetta
But to be honest, there are some significant challenges.
First, I don't think I can keep it going on my own, full-time. I have a career and I don't intend to be a rockstar like @dansup or in the news like @Gargron. If #Pinetta is going to happen, it needs a community.
Second, that community needs to be switched on to the realities I mentioned, and ready to tackle things like #ContentModeration, #Federation, and the rapidly changing landscape of decentralized social networks.
#federation #contentmoderation #Pinetta
So, where does that leave #Pinetta? Well, just because it won't solve the problems of racial, national, sexual, or economic #prejudice on its own, doesn't mean that it's not a good idea. There's been a lot of interest in the project. A lot of people want to see it happen. We've had a lot of ideas, tooâlike opt-in, tagged commercial posting that would allow small-scale creators to show off their stuff and grow support networks while allowing users to choose what, and how much, they want to see.
As I mentioned the other day, #Pinetta has been on hold for a bit as I get through a super busy time IRL.
For context, I had thought about a Pinterest clone for Fedi since a while ago, but I only really started talking about the project after paying close attention to the trouble that black and indigenous people were having with #racism on Mastodon. Basically, I came to feel that Mastodon's structural shortcomings weren't going away, and that there was the desire for something to address them.
@atomicpoet @eco_amandine @stefan @fediversenews @pinetta đ FYI #Pinetta has been on hold due to being swamped with IRL stuff. I'm aiming to pick things back up July-ish.
And on that note!
Things have been somewhat delayed due to IRL business, so some of the items in our roadmap have slipped. We've had some substantial discussions about our database schema and have started on getting our workflow standardized; #Django is set up with some #Pinetta basics baked into it.
Keeping the regular consultations on community building going has proved difficult due to the IRL delays, as there's a lot of communication that needs to happen there.
Human beings will always need to trade and to share what they have in order to sustain themselves, their families and their communities materially. That's why #Pinetta aims to support people who want to do business online.
But we'll also give users tools to protect themselves from the harmful effects of the attention economy. Sure, you can peddle your wares. And you can also fine-tune all your feeds and opt never to see a commercial post ever again. To us, that puts the "F"âfreeâin #FOSS.
Now, to me, that raises lots of questions about what I'm calling content sovereigntyâthat is, a user is the boss of what they post. Users should be able to opt out of *their own content* being shared in other people's collections in this way, just as they should be able to opt out of comments and so on. This means that if you use #Pinetta and opt out of sharing for all your posts, another Pinetta user won't be able share it; ideally boosts/AP announce from elsewhere will be disallowed as well.
With a little nudge from @catboomer, we've been having some conversations about #Pinetta as a content discovery mechanism for the #Fediverse. Seeing as it can potentially federate with and display everything on the Fedi via #ActivityPub, that means people who want to could use it to curate their own personal collections of what's goodâsort of like a DIY FediFollows. Pretty nice idea.
#activitypub #fediverse #Pinetta
And if you're wondering what this has to do with #Pinetta: From the start, one of the project's goals has been to give #CommunityBuilding the same importance as the tech framework, and moderation and community safety issues (or what they call Trust and Safety) are a big part of that.
It might sound like a big ask to do things this way, but the discussions we've had so far have been enriching and thought-provoking. It ain't easy but in the end, you feel so much better having taken time for it.
