Are you having trouble using Mastodon or PixelFed accounts on the official Mastodon app?

- You can use the official app for accounts on any Mastodon or PixelFed server, including servers not on the app's own list. When you're signing in, enter your server name and it will work (even if it's not on the list). Just type the server's name in full, and then your password in the password section.

- You can sign in with multiple accounts at once on the official app by pressing the account icon in the bottom right corner until it says "Add account". You can use the same menu to switch between accounts.

- To sign out of an account in the official app, select the account you want to sign out of, then go to the ⚙️ Settings menu, scroll down to the "Spicy Zone" and select "Sign out".

PixelFed :pixelfed: is one of the types of server that make up the Fediverse :fediverse:

It focuses on photos and images, with an interface that's somewhat similar to Instagram. There's more info on the official site at https://pixelfed.org and their official account is @pixelfed

You can follow PixelFed accounts from Mastodon, you might even be doing so already without realising it, because from within Mastodon they will look like any other account. (For example @connyduck is a PixelFed account)

You can get a PixelFed account yourself by signing up on a PixelFed server. There's a list of servers to join at https://fedidb.org/software/pixelfed, but unfortunately they don't currently tell you anything about how one server differs from another, so you'll have to rely on word of mouth.

There's no official app for PixelFed released yet (though there is one in testing), but you can use PixelFed accounts through Mastodon apps.

As you may have seen, @pixelfed has made changes to its software so that it is now compatible with most Mastodon apps.

This means (if the new feature is working correctly!) you can log into your PixelFed account on a Mastodon app, as long as your PixelFed instance has updated to the latest version of the software. Ask your instance admin if you're not sure.

The Mastodon app compatibility is brand new so it may have bugs. The PixelFed team has asked people to let them know if they have any problems.

Alternatively, there's a dedicated PixelFed app for Android called @PixelDroid which is available from @fdroidorg. There's a guide for installing F-Droid at https://switching.software/replace/google-play

Also, there's an official dedicated PixelFed app on the way for Android and iOS, though it hasn't been released yet.

PixelFed now supports viewing text-only posts, by going to:

Settings > Timelines > Show text-only posts

This lets you see text-only posts in your timeline made by Fediverse accounts you follow through PixelFed.

(Due to its photo-oriented nature, PixelFed hides text-only Fediverse posts by default.)
