Also, found this great mod for #Ploopy trackball to change the loud cylindrical bearings for much smoother ball transfer units:

Correction: #Ploopy mouse has enough buttons for my use case, it is just the trackball that I’d like to have the same amount of them as the mouse does.
For those who don’t know what I’m talking about – #Ploopy is a #DIY #OSHW #FOSS #mouse #trackball

I ordered and received a #ploopy trackball, and I gotta say, it's a pretty great product. Sure, I could have made it myself, but I'm okay throwing some money down to support projects that I feel are beneficial to everyone. Having more #openhardware and #OpenSource devices is one of those things.
If you're OK with some rough edges (quite literally, they're 3D printed) and want to see a more open future, consider visiting https://www.ploopy.co/ for your next device.

Seeing that @pronk is here reminded me to check to see if the #ploopy open DIY #headphone kit is available to order - and it is! https://ploopy.co/headphones/
I'm pretty excited to try it out, I've never owned planar magnetic headphones, and I expect to learn a lot messing around with the open source DAC/AMP
HOMG! I think I'm certainly moving in the right direction now with these #OpenHardware #headphones from #ploopy

Looking at a finger #trackball to use. I'm thinking of the #Elecom Huge trackball or the #Ploopy (Ploopy.co), any one have thoughts or experiences with the two?
Note to self: The #ploopy mouse works much better when all three bearings are installed 🙃
Not *exactly* a #mechanicalkeyboard post, but probably interesting to the same set of folks.
This is the #trackball I use at my campus office. The electronics and base body design are from #ploopy, but I printed the body myself for the colors (they match my keyboard, of course) and to use the "BTU mod" developed by other community members. In this design, the ball rests on three Ball Transfer Units (BTUs) which are themselves basically 360° ball bearings.
The ball is a giant stainless steel ball bearing. It's an absolute unit at about 1/3 of a kg. Glides like butter on those BTUs.
Runs #qmk firmware, of course.

yay new trackball day! this is a #Ploopy Classic, replacing a Kensington Expert trackball
It runs QMK firmware, and parts are 3D printed, so it's easy mod and generate replacements.
Today I saw a great picture of an Elecom HUGE, and I liked it. I liked it so much that now I want one.
Trying to find a place I can buy one that's in the EU is proving to be difficult, so I may have to end up ordering from Japan, I guess.
Not going to order via Amazon or Ebay, though. And will have to run it by my wife, too. That complicates things, because I bought a Ploopy recently.
Maybe once I finish porting #Kaleidoscope to #Ploopy? That'd be an incentive, rewarding myself with a HUGE.
New day, new #Ploopy + #Kaleidoscope adventures!
It still doesn't move, but at least I can read some registers (PID, REVID, PID2) reliably, so that's a bit of progress.
IT MOVES!
It's terrible code at the moment, will need a whole lot of cleanup, but I have a #Kaleidoscope-powered #Ploopy Trackball Mini now.
Ah, I see. The way the bootloader stuff works on the #Ploopy is different from what I expected. I expected the bootloader to handle it, and stick to bootloader mode if certain conditions are met.
But it's the firmware that's supposed to jump to the bootloader. The firmware I flashed does have a device.reset Focus command available, but it looks like the reset code bitrotted for the AtmelDFU bootloader.
Guess I'll have to short some pins and fix that.
I have #Kaleidoscope booted up on my #Ploopy mini, didn't take much, and the buttons seem to be working fine.
Making the trackball itself work will take a bit more time, as I found no ADNS5050 library for arduino that'd be in a good shape. So I'll have to either port QMK's, or write one from scratch (using QMK's driver for clues).
My #Ploopy as arrived!
Well, almost. It arrived at the post office, wife picked it up when dropping the kids off to summer camp, so I'll have it in my clutches in a few hours when she gets home.
Exciting!
On the other hand, this forces my hand to work on some low hanging fruits around #Chrysalis, because come monday, it's #Ploopy time, and I'll likely disappear for a few days, before I re-emerge with some pointer support pull request for #Kaleidoscope.
