A semipalmated plover (Charadrius semipalmatus) in late May. These winter all over the US and southern Canada, and breed in Alaska and Northern Canada. Like many other plovers they rely on beaches and other shore areas to feed and make new plovers.

Don't drive on the beach. This is a piping plover (endangered) hanging out in a tire track.
These are small birds that shelter from the wind in any cavity in the beach. They aren't the only ones that do this.

A piping plover in full aggressive mode. This week seems to have had a lot of bird drama in the Rockaways area. The piping plovers, American oystercatchers, and tree swallows were all visibly fighting over nesting spots.
