This morning I have been sitting in a review of our #PolarRES project with EC + an independent scientist.
It's incredibly cool, seeing progress over the last 18 months, some incredible work already done + lots more on the way.

This figure shared by PI Priscilla Mooney struck me again.
What we're trying to do with the very high resolution #RCMs and the stretched grids in the #GCMs is *hard* + never really tried before.

Awesome #outreach plan too

On a #PolarRES call with collaborators in #Ukraine who are joining with power for their computer + internet only from their recently installed #SolarPanels.

#DistributedPower from #Renewables is also a way of building societal #Robustness as well as reducing #EnergyDependence on enemy regimes.

If I can add more evidence of #Ukraine's #badassery (which if you read the piece you will see is not entirely unproblematic), #UkrainianScientists continued to run ultra #highResolution regional #ClimateModels, until the electricity was cut off by missiles. They are still writing + editing #IPCC reports, participating in #UNFCCC + #COP27 + planning #Antarctic #Fieldwork.

Proud to have them as partners in #HorizonEU #PolarRES

Almost the last trip of the year: To Liege to talk #PROTECT +#POLARRES with the #MAR group and to examine a PhD thesis. Looking forward to some good discussions with Xavier Fettweis and the rest of the group on coupled #ClimateModel development with #ocean #SeaIce + #IceSheet, next gen #RegionalClimateModels and how to choose #CMIP6 #ESMs for #downscaling.

BTW - are there any other #EUMETSAT people on here? We had a joint #EO work shop in #PolarRES with #ESA + Eumetsat #CMSAF - I was super impressed with the datasets they have curated for #Climate Modellers like me!

Totally in awe of our #Ukraine partners in the #PolarRES project: running #ClimateModels right up to their building being damaged by missiles, the ongoing power cuts in #Kyiv and elsewhere due to Russian attacks on #energy infrastructure now also affecting their work.
We need to keep supporting them + Ukraine generally as they push back the Russian invasion. I wish I could do more, but working with #AntarcticScientists from Ukraine makes me aware of how privileged I am to live in #safety

@jamespope10 @jdannan we had a talk about an application of this in the #PolarRES project where it was used with reindeer herders in the Arctic to communicate impacts of climate changes in a meaningful way, it was quite effective. And I learnt much more about how reindeer herding is much more complex than I'd ever really expected!
