Bootscarpers of Pollokshields in Glasgow.

These pieces of street furniture would have once been found at the entrance to most town houses and many tenement closes. You can still find them outside buildings across the city, but the design in the bottom left is not one I've seen elsewhere. Thanks to Harjam10 on Twitter for bringing it to my attention.

Pollokshields Public School in Glasgow. This school was designed by H and D Barclay in a Palazzo style and was built in 1879. It is now part of Pollokshields primary school.

The former Pollokshields West Church on Shields Road in Glasgow. Built in the 1870s, and designed by W.G. Rowan, this church has more than a hint of Alexander 'Greek' Thomson about it, right down to the tall, square tower at one corner and the Egyptian-style palm frond motifs.

Saint Albert's Parish Church in the Pollokshields area of Glasgow. Built in an Italian Renaissance style 1886 from a design by John B Wilson. This church wouldn't look remotely out of place in a small Italian vilage rather than in the middle of Glasgow.

Albert Cross on the southside of Glasgow.

This was once the commerical centre of the Victorian burgh of East Pollokshaws. It was marked by fine tenements built in the late 1800s, three of which featured corner bay windows with impressive turretted roofs. After fires in 2020 (middle) and 2019 (right), only one of these distinctive turrets remains standing (left).

The former Glasgow Steam Laundry and Carpetbeating Works on Ablert Drive in the Pollokshields area of Glasgow.

Built around 1895 in a French Renaissance style, this is a reminder of the days when, if you were well enough off to be able to afford carpets, you'd regularly send them out to be cleaned!

Pollokshields Public Library on the south side od Glasgow. Opened in 1907, it was designed in an Edwardian Baroque style by Thomas Gilmour with revised by superior, A.B. MacDonald.

Main door to the former Printing Works on Darnley Street in Pollokshields, Glasgow. Designed by D.B. Dobson and built in 1902, this building has some amazing Art Nouveau details. I love the tiles around this doorway, and the fact that the lower hinges have been made into snake's heads.

Sherbrooke Castle Hotel, PollokShields, Glasgow, in today's snow.

Originally a large villa, it was built in the Scots Renaissance style in 1896 from a design by Thomson and Sandilands.

It's first occupant was John Morrison, a contractor who who built many of the city's grander buildings, including the magnificant Glasgow City Chambers in George Square.
