@CStamp One word sums it up perfectly -- . That's when we figure out that we're all living on the same planet -- and what happens when the sh*t hits the fan at the same time.

"Diamond identified three key indicators or precursors of imminent dissolution: a persistent pattern of environmental change for the worse like long-lasting droughts; signs that existing modes of agriculture or industrial production were aggravating the crisis; and an elite failure to abandon harmful practices and adopt new means of production. At some point, a critical threshold is crossed and collapse invariably follows."

We Are Witnessing the First Stages of Civilization’s

Will our own elites perform any better than the rulers of Chaco Canyon, the Mayan heartland, and Viking Greenland?

by Michael T. Klare, August 22, 2023

"The question today is: Will our own elites perform any better than the rulers of Chaco Canyon, the Mayan heartland, and Viking Greenland?

"As Diamond argues, each of those civilizations arose in a period of relatively benign climate conditions, when temperatures were moderate and food and water supplies adequate. In each case, however, the climate shifted wrenchingly, bringing persistent drought or, in Greenland’s case, much colder temperatures. Although no contemporary written records remain to tell us how the ruling elites responded, the archaeological evidence suggests that they persisted in their traditional ways until disintegration became unavoidable."

There are tonnes more, maybe this is time for a long-form essay on , and ! But back to the original point of how such terms and terminologies emerge and evolve. While the intentions are always to clarify, classify and rally around, they quickly become loose and/or murky, and then abused to the point that they mean nothing! . (n/n)

2) The assertion that these crisis have effects that emerge and intermingle, and there new problems or effects emerge is great. But that assertion grossly underestimates the fact that many of these crisis are already interconnected. The underlying complexity that stems from this interconnectedness requires greater attention than the myopic focus on the effects of the crisis. (2/n)

This article by Ville Lähde at Aeon does a wonderful breakdown of the emergence of the word : aeon.co/essays/the-case-for-po. I've always felt uncomrtable for a number of reasons, 1) The discourse is dominated by the assumption that the multiple crisis being discussed are the starting point and that we need to respond to them rather than investigate the underlying causes... Yllätän itseni liittämällä tuohon jatkoksi Päivi Anttilan 13.8. kirjoituksen Elokapinan blogissa,

Olen ikäni kärsinyt intellektualisaation defenssistä, ja kotisivuillani kritisoin mm. resilienssin ja toivon käsitteiden halpamyyntiä ja ylipäänsä "sisäistelyä". Tuossa artikkelissa jokin kuitenkin resonoi vahvasti, ja toivon vain, ettei seuraavassa jaksossa langeta mielen-vääntelyn ansaan.

Crops are already starting to fail:

India has banned exports of rice.

The will result in a food crisis, a migration crisis, a biodiversity crisis, a health crisis.

Capitalism is a death cult and we really need to quit.

The “new abnormal”: The rise of extreme briefly explained

is contributing to heavier precipitation, a major factor in flooding.

By Li Zhouli@vox.com Updated Jul 17, 2023, 9:41am EDT

"This weekend, the suburbs were hit with heavy flash flooding that inundated roads and killed five people. Earlier this month, also experienced heavy flooding that trapped people in their homes and damaged roads and buildings. Nationally, tens of millions of people were under a flood watch on Sunday, while globally, countries including , , and have seen destructive flooding that has displaced millions of people and forced evacuations in the last year.

"As the Earth gets warmer, the atmosphere is able to hold more water, leading to heavier precipitation when it rains, and a greater likelihood of flooding as a result. A 1 degree Centigrade increase in the atmosphere’s temperature corresponds to a 7 percent increase in water vapor that it’s able to hold, according to the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions. And estimates suggest global temperatures could breach a 1.5 degree Celsius increase threshold sometime in the 2030s, meaning much more rain to come."

There’s no such thing as a disaster-resistant place anymore

risks are becoming increasingly expensive. Not just locally, but globally.

By Rachel DuRose, Jul 13, 2023

"'It’s getting harder and harder to adapt to these changing conditions,' Rachel Cleetus, policy director for the climate and energy program at the Union of Concerned Scientists, told the New York Times this week. 'It’s just everywhere, all the time.'

"The risk of natural disasters is everywhere (even in the most resilient places). People will no longer just have to prepare for intensified versions of the natural disasters they know, but they will also have to consider the possibility of new types of , , , , and — impacting their community."
