Alright. I've decided I am actually going to do it. I am going to make Void Linux Mobile. I was on the fence beforehand because I was thinking "I am just a lowly Linux nerd. How could I ever achieve such a feat?" But with the trail having already been blazed for me by the likes of #postmarketOS #mobian and #mobilenixos it seems feasible. Don't expect anything grandiose out of this. It will just be a small hobby project.

It seems in later updates for the TCL A3 (bangkok_tf), TCL decided to block access to BROM mode in production. Luckily, they also seem to have left an exploit to access fastboot in the build. 😉

That means that, no matter the update, you should be able to get mainline Linux running on your TCL A3.

New mt6762 mainlining update! This one is a big one, so bear with me.

We now have the following working:
- postmarketOS rootfs
- USB
- 4 CPU Cores
- Haptics
- SD-Card
- PMIC Buttons (Hardware Buttons)
- Real Time Clock
- Thermal (Just not calibrated)
- i2c
- Backlight
- Flashlight
- Charger
- Framebuffer (simplefb causes a kernel panic, but we can still read logs)

The MediaTek mt6765 page (which mt6762 is compatible with) has been given a overhaul by the amazing adomerle. Now it states every feature of the SOC, the drivers, and the progress to get them mainlined.

postmarketOS's pmbootstrap has spoiled me. Going to work on a Mobile NixOS port and having to manually setup a package and such is a completely different workflow, with most of the workflow having been handled for me under postmarketOS.

Is there a tool like pmbootstrap for Mobile NixOS? If not, I have my next project.

Well. Good news for testing. The TCL A3 can boot from an sdcard as long as the kernel is flashed to the device. So that is good I guess?

So the mt6762 mainlining effort has hit a snag. Getting logs is going to be a pain because the device I am using doesn't seem to have open UART ports, framebuffer doesn't work, and USB doesn't work either. Without logs, we can't get the logs. Might try ramoops.

Anybody know how to get GPS working on the #Pinephone ? Running #SXMO from #PostmarketOS using #mepo , but honestly in over my head and don't know where to start with trying to get accurate location data...

Compiling a Linux kernel with mt6762 support right now. :blobcat_praise: It is very limited in scope for now. (Just the clocks, pin control, and basic SOC drivers are added.) Hopefully this is enough to initialize the SOC so I can begin mainlining. :blobcatroll:

What is a fate worse than death? Adding a new SOC to the Linux kernel.

I have been trying to get the MediaTek mt6762 SOC integrated with the mainline kernel, but it just seems to either do nothing or the bootloader of my device refuses to boot the mainline kernel? (Probably a DTS issue.) Either way, this is a pain.

Oh! And did I tell you I don't know C? That's the best part...
