This story for @Nature is one of a series of features I've written in recent years about the growing scientific understanding of how #hormones influence #MentalHealth in both women and men.
It's also a story of how #misogyny in medicine and science have contributed to the neglect of women's mental health, by dismissing anything 'hormonal' as irrelevant.
That it has taken until now for there to be a drug specifically for severe #PostNatalDepression is evidence of this neglect.
But now, thanks to work by pioneers such as Prof Jayashri Kulkarni, these neurohormonal interactions are being explored, and it's opening the door to new treatments for everything from #PMDD to menstrual migraines to major #depression in both men and women.

@cgbrooding @simid @librarianknight @actuallyautistic This is an interesting concept. I wonder if #autism and #Postnataldepression are often muddied? I’ve only just come to realise that #ASD exists in our family and how that has impacted our parenting. The lack of diagnosis perpetuates trauma and healthier community outcomes would result from additional investment in this field.
