3/ Europe 1848, and revolution is in the air. The call for change needed a new thinking. Millet and Gustave Courbet were at the forefront: rejection of Neoclassicism, painting the everyday, access for all, democracy. You don't need to be tutored to intuit the beauty in a bowl of the rustic. It was rough; and it was the Modern.
The #PreRaphaelites also began their movement: painting Arthurian legends for a nation enjoying its day in the sun. And an artistic cul-de-sac.
