@helenczerski Just had this discussion recently with other colleagues. I have colleagues publishing in Frontiers and have cited F. published work. But if it's up to me, I would avoid them when submitting articles for publication. But avoiding them does beget the question whether their business model is fundamentally worse or more predatory than the traditional big publishing houses.

A friend found today two fake papers written in her name by predatory journals. Anyone have this happen? How did you fight back?

I share Zen Faulkes' concerns about who exactly predatoryreports.org/ is and how they judge and (most recently , certainly now a questionable publisher): neurodojo.blogspot.com/2023/03

P.S. Is Zen on Mastodon yet?

is a free market. It behaves as one. There is a high demand for uncritical, fast publishing -> cover that. There is also a high demand for high visibility (marketed as "impact"). brands ("Nature", "Frontiers") accommodate that, of course for a price. High demand for a rare commodity drives profits. It's simple.

@DewiLanglet An interesting, substantial difference indeed. However, a plausible explanation would be that consists of about the for motivation and the potential conflict of interest of publishers while people who are happy on the bird side lean towards pro-business .
Besides the real problem of undermining the quality control and feedback of reviews, arguments are often reduced to a polarized either-or world.

It's interesting to compare yesterday's poll results on twitter (right, white background) and mastodon (left, dark background):

1 - Much higher engagement in Mastodon (63 votes vs 12).

2 - People on Mastodon are much more sceptic about Frontiers (17% vs 50% "not predatory")

What do you think about Frontiers journals, are they predatory?

Björn's take is that checks all boxes.
