The Europa Conference 2023: "Peopling the Past: Reflecting on Prehistoric Europe" will be held at the University of Cambridge from 2-4th June 2023. This year the conference honours the achievements of Prof Marie Louise Stig Sørensen, University of Cambridge, in the field of European Prehistory.
The programme and booking form can be found here:
Those of you who've been torc watchers for some time may remember the 'they were chewing gold at #Snettisham' torcs.
Having now looked at these in the flesh & under a microscope, it's still in the frame. I also showed the photos to someone with a lot of experience of forensic dentistry, and they too thought it was likely (photo caveats apply).
Watch this space... next steps will be to hopefully get moulds and look at them properly. Another for the To Do list...

Very much recommending this new book by Duncan Mackay to you all.... it's a superb read with a lot of new information and written in a lovely style.
There's enough precise detail for archaeologists/historians, but it is also a cracking good read with plenty of humour... one of those fabulous books that not only educates, but entertains!!
Echolands: A journey in search of Boudica by Duncan Mackay.

Spring 2023 PAST newsletter now online and FREE to read: Harting barrow, Arminghall henge, research we've supported (from the Hallstatt collection to Moroccan fieldwork)...and cows coming home!
Plus much more besides.

Paper copies will be landing on doormats very soon.
That thing when you post about a #torc you've been looking at & suddenly look at photo close up & realise that, yes, the thing attached to this torc *also* has crap dripped on it, just like so much of the stuff attached/used to repair/added to torcs, but never the complete torcs.
Yet another example of how they were mixing & matching #Snettisham hoards. Honestly, these hoard deposits happened quick - really, really, really quick.

Having ground to a halt with a couple of other projects (one day we'll get the data we need... but until then, all kinds of fun with #torc deposition distribution will have to wait) I've been messing about with this - it & its broken buddy are intriguing.
Looks like we've found 2 more torcs made by the same person & an unusual #metalworking technique.

Still time to book for our talk torc tonight, 7pm: on zoom & free. We always aim to have a bit of everything in our talks - if you've seen us talk before, there will always be something new, if you know nothing about torcs, you'll find out a bit about them.
...and if all else fails, I guarantee some pretty gold photos!!! 🤣
Tonight's talk is about looking at torcs from a perspective beyond East Anglia!

Next lecture, 16th March (next Thursday), 7pm. On zoom and free (just sign up on the link) and we'll be taking a Scottish/Northern perspective on this one - did torcs *really* come from East Anglia or are we still too loaded with colonial ideas that only the South had what it takes to make pretty things?????

Noonans auction house looks to be the new Hansons - these two go up for sale today. Legal (as they're single bronze items - the changes to the Treasure Act should prevent this in future), but neither are recorded on PAS, and this is the same auctioneers that sold the Knaresborough ring and wouldn't allow me access to research it.....
Grrrr....
