Thank goodness for the system. Situations like these in other countries such as the could lead to financial ruin.

In the 12 years since Makena was fast-tracked by the FDA, about 350,000 patients received pricey injections to prevent premature birth, a major health issue facing children and families.

There was just one problem: there’s no evidence Makena actually works. My latest for @TheGuardian

An interesting article on reduced preterm birth rates during the pandemic. Implications stated by authors: “The hypothesis that changes in work-related stress led to reductions in preterm birth during the pandemic is seductive, though the patterns of clinician-initiated preterm birth suggest that obstetric service disruptions may be a simpler and more plausible explanation.”

Latest from AJOG. “Changing levels of sFlt-1 and PlGF are indicative of placental dysfunction and are strongly associated with the risk of spontaneous preterm birth, especially when combined with slower fetal femur length growth.

Since current therapies are pretty poor at delaying birth and improving neonatal outcomes, this review on the potential for repurposing drugs to inhibit or decrease uterine contractions/inflammation is timely.

Living in an area with high police presence increases the odds of a premature birth for both Black and white residents. Greater police presence in Black vs white neighborhoods may contribute to the persistent Black-White preterm birth disparity.

New AJOG Preprint.

Key Finding: “SARS-CoV-2 infection within the first two trimesters of pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of early preterm birth (PTB) (≤32 weeks) and stillbirth compared to infection within the third trimester. The risk of PTB was higher within the first 4 weeks after infection.”
