@yassie_j RMS was right, again. He warned us about ebooks ~20 years ago. The “Amazon Swindle” he calls it. Books at school libraries are often jailed in #Proquest, a walled garden Cloudflare site. So access is exclusive before you even talk about software. Then indeed, closed-source apps that exclusively reachable through Google is another layer of exclusivity.

NPR runs ads on their shows for a Cloudflare site (#Proquest). Proquest jails textbooks in the exclusive walled garden of #Cloudflare. Yet NPR’s ad specifically says Proquest is “open to all”. So not only do they falsely advertise something that’s exclusive as inclusive, but you can’t microblog a complaint about this that reaches them b/c they are exclusively on #Twitter (in effect, by neglecting their fedi acct).

The user experience of #ProQuest is terrible. I'm not imaging DRM-free books. Even compared to other online book services like #Oreilly , to use ProQuest is hard and miserable.

If funding and space are allowed, I wish the university libraries could purchase at least one physical copy of these books. More user-friendly and more reliable.

@tofugolem @drcaberry @scerruti Many schools outsource ebooks to a company called #Proquest, which in fact jails the books in the walled garden of Cloudflare. Ebooks in schools are a great way to marginalize and discriminate against some kids (e.g. poor kids & kids who grok privacy). Paper books completely avoid that problem.

@hugh I've never understood the #ProQuest business case. It's a very USA-specific thing, right? Do they still paywall theses and dissertations?

La naturalesa humana és ben curiosa i absurda. A la #BiblioEpiscopal fa 2 anys que tenim plataforma d' #ebooks amb #EbookCentral de #ProQuest. Va creixent poc a poc, sobretot gràcies als seminaristes més joves. Avui, pel tancament de 15 dies de tot el Seminari+Facultats, se m'acut enviar un correu a tots els professors de la casa, que l'havien ignorat sistemàticament malgrat els correus que enviem periòdicament. Només aquesta tarda he aprovat l'alta de 5 de professors.

Finestres d'oportunitat?
