Death to self can be very hard to walk out, since the flesh rarely wants to die. You’ve probably experienced this whenever you’ve struggled to resist tempting food, to not lash out when offended or hurt or tried to stay patient in a situation.

Scripture says the flesh is weak (Matt 26:41), so why does it try to win the battle when we put up resistance?

It’s a daily process we go through, just as Paul and Jesus said it would be (1Co 15:21; Lk 9:23). There has to be a true understanding of the Word to kill our sinful nature.

When we learn to kill the flesh, it will only make us more alive in Christ. It will no longer have control over you and it will become subject to you; then more of God’s nature can be revealed in you.

Eye of the Storm

The Early Church taught that this rest comes through understanding our soul and by the knowledge of the mind of Christ. All through our Christian walk, we are bound to experience trials and tribulation. In fact, the testing is necessary for our perfection. In scripture, we read James exhorting the saints to be joyful in trials, because through these trials we come to maturity:
“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing,” (Jas 1:2-4).
The Early Church taught that temptations (trials) are the very thing to guard our soul from becoming weak.

The chosen ones are those who are willing to forsake all and lay down their life for another. To be a fully surrendered vessel that God can abide in and work through. God doesn’t cherry pick specific people to carry out His will. It all comes down to a person’s heart and if they love truth therefore you can choose if you want to carry out God’s will. There is a pattern with every person who was chosen in scripture and they all had a characteristic of obedience. We can see everyone who was obedient to God having a relationship with Him was gifted with grace to understand the ways of God.
It is the deeper understanding of scripture that heals a soul not the memorization of scripture.
