Let's be clear. ICWA relates to Tribal Entities (i.e. Federally Recognized).
Tribes not recognized have no protection as it stands (e.g. Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina ).
So it is a little misleading to include all Indigenous people in appealing to US sentiment & support.
Tribes existed before Federal Recognition.

Almost jumped in to correct this because ICWA is not a race based law. Almost until I realized Timothy Sandefur is part of the Goldwater Institute, an entity that has been behind the challenges to ICWA. His tweet and assessment wasn't a mistake or misunderstanding. It was intentional. It was meant to push the narrative of ICWA being a race based law and not a law based on protecting children and families of sovereign nations within foster systems and adoption industries that bridge the nation to nation relationship between tribes & the U.S. I do fear they are right tho, SCOTUS is in the position to gut ICWA not only due to their ignorance of Federal and Native law, but their refusal to see Native people as contemporary peoples and inability to hide their political corruption.

We're in such a precarious position and I would love to place all blame on the Republicans but we also wouldn't be in this position of Democrats did more than just tweet their outrage and stopped holding promises of action over our heads to fundraise. It's also telling how quiet a lot of Democrats have been in regards to ICWA considering this ruling is going to reverberate beyond just ICWA to the heart of our sovereignty as tribal nations. And it's not just us Natives who will be impacted. ICWA is considered a gold standard of child welfare laws and influences the placement and adoption of other BIPOC children, without ICWA, we'll see an increase of BIPOC children literally being trafficked and sold through the foster care system/for-profit adoption industry. At even higher rates than what already exist because their endgame as with anything is obscene profit from the commodification of anything and everything, including children. It's about making sure the 1% continues to hoard not only wealth but power. It's about keeping the rest of us compliant and what better way than to literally break us by taking the children who hold the futures of our cultures and communities. #ProtectICWA #ICWA
