Despite the fact that Republicans blocked the Senate from even TALKING about voter protection legislation last week, the fight to pass voter protection legislation isn’t over.

Starting today and through Saturday, July 10th (the period when members of Congress are home for recess), there’s a lot going on to help get voting rights legislation passed. One of the larger mass mobilizations is called Deadline For Democracy and it’s really got momentum.

I’m a big fan of Stacey Abrams' Fair Fight Action and one of their actions this summer is amplifying the efforts of Black Voters Matter, which is having a summer Freedom Ride.

This week, BVM is will be traveling by bus for a voter outreach tour from Mississippi to Washington D.C., making stops in key southern states. 

BVM’s Freedom Rides for Voting Rights, which continues the tradition of the original Freedom Rides, comes as more than 40 states consider legislation to restrict voting rights, which would have a disproportionate impact on Black communities. In addition to voter outreach and engagement, the bus tour will raise awareness about this harmful legislation and empower communities to combat restrictions to early voting, absentee ballots, and other important reforms. Show up and help spread the word.

Last night, Democratic activist and amazing person Stacey Abrams was on Joy Reid’s show on MSNBC and encouraged everyone (yes, everyone) to call their Senators EVERY DAY this month in support of the voting rights protection bill, the #ForthePeopleAct (HR1/S1.)

Great idea! From their event page: “As temperatures rise this summer, we are turning up the heat and calling our Senators to demand that they pass the For the People Act as it heads to a vote this month. This bill would block efforts to suppress the right to vote and protect the freedom to vote for every eligible American."

Whether it's this exact bill or another, we need to make sure our Senators hear us loud and clear that we expect them to pass a voting rights bill as soon as possible. Please do it.

More Americans voted in the last election than ever before, yet as a percentage of the electorate it was barely half of eligible voters. And Republicans think this is too many. Why? Because more voters will put them out of office.

Voters will decide at the polls who runs this nation whether Republicans try to suppress voter participation in our elections or not. We will overcome it. Democracy is in the DNA of Americans and we know it is being dismantled by Republicans. Just like waves of people turned out beat a failed one-term president, they will turnout in droves in FL, GA, Texas and any other state that tries to suppress the right to vote.

Thanks to Texas Democrats for their work in trying to stop this measure and bring more attention to it. We all need to be watching.

Imagine having no ability to appeal to voters, no agenda or platform that wins new votes, no vision to promote, no solutions to offer to the country's challenges, and the only way you can win is by stopping the votes of other Americans. That's what this is. It leads to a Republican authoritarianism, which is what they want.

Democrats in ALL states need to be finding those voters who need help through this, making themselves available in every county and accessible and up to date on what's going on. This needs to be happening NOW.

Find your local Democratic Party, join a chapter of the League of Women Voters, join a group like Fair Fight Action, Black Voters Matter, Vote Forward, or Swing Left. Support organizations like Democracy Docket that are filing lawsuits on behalf of voters at the state level.

We have to make these efforts backfire on Republicans and backfire hard and it's going to take everyone on the side of voting rights to do it.

What Republicans are attempting to do, in Michigan and elsewhere, is to disenfranchise voters who would be inclined to vote them out. It's that simple.

Ron Weiser, current Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, is attempting to toss out the votes of people disinclined to support Republican candidates. Michiganders should be outraged.

But outrage alone will not be sufficient to prevent Republicans like Mr. Weiser from hijacking the electoral process to suit their selfish desires for power. Michigan residents who object to GOP chicanery need to rise up and fight this attempt at a Republican coup. The rest of us need to keep shining a bright light on this issue.
