Mexico introduced six new national parks and seven flora and fauna protection areas covering 17,918 hectares (44,276 acres) to be overseen by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp).

The protected areas are located in the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Quintana Roo, Sinaloa, Oaxaca and Guerrero.

The decision released this week as part of the #HaurakiGulfFisheriesPlan does contain some good news and it’s clear the Government is listening. But while the plan creates some #ProtectedAreas, it still allows trawling in large areas of the #Gulf. So this is not the end of our fight. The movement against destructive bottom trawling is strong and so is people power.

A recent study found that 27% of surveyed marine protected areas (MPAs) were likely “paper parks” that fail to confer real ecological protection.

There are different kinds of paper parks, including those with overly permissive rules and those where the rules are not followed or enforced.
