Individuals *can* build a society that is less dependent upon cars. We are doing this in #Providence, #RhodeIsland through PVD Streets and Providence Urbanist Network. It happens one bike lane and one medium-density building at a time; these decisions are made in city meetings where a few individuals can make a big difference.

Furthermore, individuals can (sometimes) choose to live closer to work. Or buy a bike and use it for some trips. So lots that you can do. /1

@washingtonpost To be clear, I'm not saying that you shouldn't eat less meat, or that it isn't important. It is. I am saying that reducing driving in ICE vehicles is at least 2x more important from a climate perspective.

I am reminded of a fight here in #Providence with the oligarchic owner of a vegan food hall who told me that she needed to fight against a bike lane because said bike lane would limit customers to her food hall & that this was better for emissions.

Wrong on all counts. /6

Today is my favorite day where I live on Hope Street in #Providence, #RhodeIsland. It's the Hope Street Block Party. For 8 glorious hours, four or five blocks of Hope Street shut down to cars.

What we get instead:
2 stages of music
a marching band with aliens (Big Nazo)
a Lion Dance
thousands of people coming to visit, mill around, listen to music, talk with their friends & neighbors, eat, drink and buy shit. /1

Other highlights from #RIDOT closures for 7/29 - 8/4:

* Rte. 6 in #Providence from Memorial Blvd. to Dean St. overpass, road closed for bridge work, Sun.-Thurs. nights, 10 p.m.-5 a.m.

* Aquidneck Ave. in #Middletown from East Main Rd. to Green End Ave., will be closed nightly for construction, Sun.-Thurs. nights, from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. through the month of August.

* Hope St. in #Bristol from Bradford St. to State St., road closed for brush removal, Mon.,9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Also on 7/28, #RIDOT will be shifting the northbound lanes of Route 146 under the Hawkins St bridge in #Providence #RhodeIsland from the left to the right until the end of the year. The southbound lanes will also be shifted to the right sometime in mid-August.

As the heat rises to 88F (31C) in #Providence just before with 63% humidity (feels like 95F/35C), rooftop #solar is doing its part to keep all of us in #NewEngland cool and keep the lights on.

Unfortunately, we are still burning massive amounts of fracked gas (blue) and even some petroleum (pink).

But we have likely brought today's peak demand down by a gigawatt or two. We'll check back in tonight.

Moving on tonight from my day job, I’m at a #Providence City Council hearing to oppose a measure by NIMBYs to restrict the number of students living in a particular home - which will make #housingcrisis worse.

Amazing how many affluent, older white people have nothing better to complain about than “quality of life” issues. #YIMBY

The #Providence City Plan Commission approved the variance. We won.

Last night, a half dozen of my urbanist friends here in #Providence attended the City Plan Commission meeting - mostly virtually - to argue in favor of a 5-story development (mixed retail and commercial) at 116 Waterman Street.

The development needed a height variance to go to 58', and there were squabbles going on about measures to ensure that noise was limited - despite this being a block off of Thayer Street in a commercial district. /1

On the section of N. main Street in #Providence controlled by RIDOT. With RIDOT under Alviti, the untimely death of humans not in cars is an inevitability.

Ultimately, the state of #RhodeIsland needs a target to reduce VMT and a plan to achieve it. If California can do 25%, with our dense pre-car settlement patterns in the inner core of the #Providence metro area, we should be able to do at least this much. /6/end
