, possibly x subhirtella 'Atsumori', blooming now. I think this is my favourite! Sweet light perfume.

Four views of the flowers from close and further away. They grow in clusters of about 10 flowers, each is semi-double and the most delicate warm pink washed over white petals. Each petal is rounded at the outer end. The stamens are golden yellow and sit neatly apart from each other.

The last of the yedoensis 'Akebono' for the year. The rain has knocked most of the petals off and the streets are paved with pink for a day or two.

sargentii ‘Rancho’. American selection, popular in the '50s. Tall V-shape with a narrowish crown, so it gets used in medians and sidewalk strips a lot. In Vancouver it often shows graft incompatibilty with the rootstock.

cerasifera 'Atropurpurea', purple leafed cherry-plum, sometimes included with , sometimes not.

Against a clear blue sky, three entwined twigs reaching upward. The sweet pink flowers are just beginning to open and there are plenty of buds to come. The leaves have not started to show yet.

The first day this year that I can, with a clear conscience, call spring.
This rather big shrub in the photograph is a type of Prunus, which has self seeded in the garden, where it wanted to be. Glorious weed!

subhirtella (, ) 'Whitcomb'. Some sources say it was named after David Whitcomb, who found it growing as a volunteer in his Seattle garden in the 1920s and subsequently propagated and distributed it around the north-west coast of North America. It's usually the first to bloom in the park at the end of our street -- they're just beginning now.
