Some thoughts about failure, in relation to .

It is OK to:
- be a beginner
- experiment
- make mistakes
- have a bad day

Not OK:
- malice
- negligence
- lack of preparation / planning
- refusing help when it is needed
- quietly disregarding advice instead of questioning it.

Know yourself and your limits, do your best, and then fail. :)

Every now and then I see some interactions on my team that really hit me emotionally. I just get so proud of the folks I get to work with, and seeing the positive results in fostering psychological safety makes me almost want to cry.

I got to see one such interaction today. One senior engineer on my team explicitly telling a teammate that they can announce some good results from the team so they can get their name out there and get some visibility - stuff warms my heart.

Many people, when they first become managers, think that they need to know everything — or at least appear to. This is a bad idea, and the subject of my most recent short article: sites.google.com/schrag.ca/con

Top tip for writers: if you're looking to commission an editor and they have a clear list of topics they don't take on, please read it.

There are solid reasons why editors do this.

It could be for psychological safety.

I have a question... how do you measure employee satisfaction and wellbeing in your engineering teams? eNPS seems to be "the thing" everyone does but it sounds too one dimensional for what I think is a nuanced topic. How do you measure it?

Omg, finally, for the first time in 4 months, I've had a moment where I've ... gotten bored? It's fucking glorious. I've finished my first deliverables for my O'Reilly class about Building . I don't have another class for until June. Grad school classes are on hiatus. Internship continues, but 15-20 hrs a week is doable. I'm caught up with Ranger lead work for our regional .

I've been thinking about the phrase "bring your whole self to work", and how it's blithely thrown around by senior management people who have nothing to lose by doing so, and may not react entirely well if people actually start doing it.

That being said, I think it's a win-win if we could build workplaces where everyone does feel safe to be authentic. And I even think it's possible to do! So I wrote a thing about it.

@eselet Probably a bit off topic, (and no published research), but I have witnessed big impacts in companies during layoffs, depending on how they treat outgoing employees. Are they treated with gratitude and respect for their contributions, or are they treated as potential cyber security threats with pre-layoff account lockdowns and security supervising their desk clean outs? It has a massive impact on the and morale of remaining staff.

Empowered employees tend to be confident individuals who are committed to meaningful goals and demonstrate initiative and creativity to achieve them. However, it takes effort, practice, time, and determination to become a truly empowering leader.

I just finished reading "The Psychological Safety Playbook" by Karolin Helbig and Minette Norman, and I would recommend it to any manager who wants to improve the psychological safety and health of their team.

I love when a business book respects my time -- there are so many that could be a pamphlet, but get expanded to 200 pages with filler. This new book is short, modular and super practical. If you are a new manager and want some super-practical tips, check it out.

Currently listening to Peter Senge’s ‘The Fifth Discipline’ on Audible. No explicit mention (yet) of but he talks about the need for inquiry and uncovering our assumptions through advocacy, and that…

“We need to have the willingness to be wrong. Nothing less will make it safe for others to do likewise.” 🙌

Highly recommend by the way! I especially like the contributions by Peter Senge himself. I think I could listen to him all day!

Have you ever been micromanaged? It's awful.

I've been talking to a lot of people recently about micromanagement, so I became curious about its relationship to psychological safety. (Spoiler: they are not compatible)

And I was left with the big question -- if micromanagement is so toxic, then why is it so widespread? And what's do be done about it? Here's the piece I wrote.
