"Experts say there’s a balance to strike in the academic world when using generative AI—it could make the writing process more efficient & help researchers more clearly convey their findings. But the tech ... has also dropped fake references into its responses, made things up, and reiterated sexist and racist content from the internet, all of which would be problematic if included in published scientific writing."

"If you use a chatbot to create or revise text, know the caveats and risks. Ask yourself why you are using a tool that isn’t validated: you’d (hopefully) not do that in another part of your research process."

Our Research Integrity Manager @mattjhodgkinson considers the integrity and ethical hurdles faced when using 'AI' tools like ChatGPT.

Classic citation manipulation 🚩

"“Our team has a wider research knowledge and experience that has been converted into high impact publications.” It is followed by more than a dozen citations of unrelated Saveetha publications."

"Researchers are under brutal pressure to publish studies. Their salary increases, promotions, project funding and social prestige depend on evaluations in which their performance is measured practically by weight. This system — known as “publish or perish” — has created monsters."

John Willinsky of the Public Knowledge Project (who run OJS) gives us a sneak preview of the Publication Facts Label, part of their Journal Integrity Initiative. Aims to be an industry standard, using the US nutrition facts label as a model.

Proposes a button, like CrossMark, that will show metadata about the journal, e.g., publisher, editors, acceptance rate, indexing, and article, e.g., peer reviewers, COIs, data sharing, funding.

Ethics of : @catmacOA presents about when things go wrong.

Manipulation at scale by and peer review rings is rife in the industry, esp. in special issues. In a year, Hindawi identified 1700+ compromised articles to retract, using data analysis and manual checks. Mass retraction, using a standardised notice, does not wait for author responses if there is a sufficient signal of manipulation or paper mills.

Developing a quality editorial board. Outgoing EASE past-president, @pippasmart, shows the levels of editors: wider family, the core team, and support staff.

Editors need to know , and be committed, collegiate, and confident. They should be objective but have a good network to promote the journal.

Core competencies of journal editors: doi.org/10.1186/s12916-017-092

Problems: unaccountable, abuse of position, little or no training, low diversity.

Many retracted articles are cited without acknowledging the retraction, notes Ivan Oransky. The Retraction Watch database is linked to many literature databases - you can get alerts to avoid getting caught out.

Current retraction rate is 0.1%: @ivanoransky thinks it should be 2%, based on work by @microbiomdigest (others say 5-10%).
