For this one I wrote about Nightbitch (by Rachel Yoder) and sensibility. But I also let myself geek about this long and luxurious sentence that piles up imagery for days.

Come across any lovely sentences lately? (Definitely count the ones you write yourself!)

The first use of the word "punctuation" was in 1531 for marking the text of a psalm to show how it should be chanted (according to the Oxford English Dictionary).

If you write as well as McCarthy then you don't need much punctuation. The rest of us, though....

Today's looked like em-dashes and en-dashes and capitals vs lowercase.

And coffee. It looked a lot like coffee.

You don’t automatically put a comma before the word "because," but sometimes you need a comma to make sure your meaning is clear.

question, in particular for folks using screen readers (but I'm interested by everyone's perspective): how important are case and to you?

For instance, is it harder to read a message, or a video transcript, if it's totally and without punctuation?

(Boosts appreciated to reach a wider audience!)

@matthewmuses @grammargirl I feel as if that sentence should have started with "Heres". 😄

@michaelgemar @jeffjarvis @grammargirl Proper use of the em-dash and en-dash has to be right up there with the Oxford comma.

So far my contributions to this manuscript consists of: Why don’t we make this ellipsis an em-dash? Better to set this phrase off with em-dashes?

I would please like a that removes these annoying we have to use for our posts to be searched and seen and replaces them with words in boldface, with proper case rather than the Camel Case we need to be using for Screen Reader also plurals and proper

One thing I notice about , which is not even about , but more the of linguistics, so to say, is that a lot of people are really judgmental about each other's language. Attacks on language, on it's supposed impurity, the use of , and regionalisms, are _exremely common_. It's as if there were a shared understanding that a person not abiding by the norms of some "official language" can't represent the "russiannness", whatever it is 1/2

My undergraduate students mostly follow conventions in paper writing that are strange to me, but they all do it. Where do they learn them? For example, they all use semicolon where a colon is wanted; "pg." as abbreviation of "page"; no full stop at the end of a footnote; etc., etc. They have weird phraseological tics as well. Can anyone explain?

@DaeganMiller I wonder if so many periods are a more modern thing. Just look at the writing of folks like and — a cornucopia of and the uses thereof!
