Mary, Queen of Scots was born on 8 December 1542 to King James V of Scotland and his French wife, Mary of Guise. After the death of her father, she was betrothed to the Dauphin of France; crowned Queen of France in 1558, but widowed in 1560. Returning to Scotland: a catholic queen in a protestant realm; forced to abdicate in 1567 in favour of her son.
