A burst water main and a landslip coincide in Queenstown. Fernhill Rd is mostly closed and the alternative via the Glenorchy Rd is down to one lane because of the slip.

My inner pedant disagrees with the author's reclassification of the Heritage Queenstown as "historic". It was built in the 90s.

It's been an open secret for years that 75% of Queenstown's recycling ends up in landfill. It's mainly because the transfer station receives 3 to 4 times the amount of material it was designed to process, but it's not a good look for a town aiming to reach carbon zero by 2030.

Glenorchy lies at the delta where the Dart & Rees rivers feed into the northern end of Lake Wakatipu. The area is a favourite location with the film industry (#LotR & more) & is the gateway to river safaris up the Dart by jet boat as well as to the trailhead for one of NZs Great Walks, the Routeburn Track. The 45 min drive from #Queenstown is very scenic.

Lake Wakatipu from Bennetts Bluff (📷1&2) & Twelve Mile Delta Campsite (📷3&4). At 80km NZs longest lake. At 291 sq km NZs 3rd largest. At 380m NZs 3rd deepest (surface at 310m elevation, so goes below sea level). 5 rivers in, 1 out. Level oscillates (a seiche or standing wave) due to unique shape & differential effects of wind/ atmosphere on “restrained” parts. #Queenstown

Kawarau Suspension Bridge (📷1) was completed in 1880. The current bridge, built in the 60s (📷2), saw it retire after 82 yrs of service (now part of #Queenstown Trail). Since 1988 AJ Hackett Bungy have encouraged thrill-seekers to plunge towards waters in the Kawarau Gorge (📷3) below it, tied—hopefully well—to an elastic cord (📷4). There’s also now a flying fox option (📷2).
