Somehow the name 'Musk' appeared in my head when I read this quote by Emil Cioran:
"Ambition is a drug
that makes its addicts
potential madmen."

Idea: what if we had #QuoteToots, but the quotee had the ability to censor their handle and maybe keep the QT from linking to the original toot?
That way the ui can attest that the original toot exists, the quoter doesn't have to go through a whole screenshot flow, and the quotee can keep themselves from getting harassed?
It might not stop dedicated trollfarms from finding the original, but perhaps that's enough friction to keep the spontaneous unplanned dogpiles from happening?
"you don't need #quotetoots you can post a link & comment"
Also, in the official #MastodonApp...
- see toot that links to a toot (or Activity Pub post)
- click it & arrive at new interface as the full web app Mastodon renders
- click boost/fave, get asked to login.
- click back> clk three dots menu> 'open in Ffox/etc'
- click URL bar> select all> copy
- back to App> Search section> paste URL
- Toot appears!
- boost
If you think this is optimal UX maybe you need time outside your tech circle
#QuoteToots should be allowed on #mastodon at least as follow-ups for your own toots. And maybe even for mutual follows. That way you could update earlier discussions without only providing bare links.
But I also think it is sensible not to be able to talk about people you have no connection to via #quotetweets, though. If you feel it is really necessary, you can still do that with screenshots, but I like that it is discouraged by default. Endless #drükos were one of the issues at #Twitter long before Musk.

I've seen some toots complaining about missing features on #Mastodon compared to #Twitter. I'd say that most of what's missing will come in time (excluding #quotetoots, which are being debated). My biggest complaint is about finding people to #follow. I'm glad there's no algorithm, and there's an old #birdsite vibe, but back then we went into some of our #followers' profiles and picked people we found interesting. This is almost impossible here, as you can only see those in your own instance.

Also, unrelated to the "viewing federated content in UXs designed for wildly different consumption model" issue...
Once again, I must express my disappointment that many server admins run Mastodon and view Akkoma/Pleroma as suspicious.
For one, I like Elixir! And secondly, Mastodon doesn't support quote posts, so I gotta hand-roll 'em like it's 2008 Twitter again.

Ich bin froh, dass #QuoteToots endlich kommen. Ich kann die Aufregung darüber absolut nicht verstehen. Wer es nicht nutzen will, nutzt es halt nicht.
I want #search terms to work more than I want #quotetoots. Quoting will always take everything out of context, and adding comments will do exactly the worst. Even a limited term search like local instance and only at least 5 days old would be a joy. People are too lazy to hashtag appropriate revealing terms.
#QuoteToots is happening, people!

I'm making a prediction: the introduction of #quoteToots will do absolutely nothing to help retention or entice users to join the #Fediverse (or even just #Mastodon in particular), and it will be responsible for a significant lowering of the level of discourse.

(1/3) The huge divide in opinion on #QuotePosts is understandable. I myself understand the appeal of the feature, and yet I also understand it can lead to harassment.
The #Mastodon protocol implementing this was inevitable, whether people liked it or not. Before the change, it was possible to include a link to another post, but it wouldn't embed. Essentially, this new update will just embed post links in quote posts, and alert the OP.

I come from a Twiiter before QTs (before RTs, as well) so I’m not actually clear on the deltas between what share to mastodon as image versus #QuoteToots proper might be. Maybe not enough clients support it? Maybe there’s insufficient metadata? Idk. I’m sure someone will tell me.
I feel like the preview doesn't do the headline justice.

Unfortunately, two of #mastedon 's worst decisions were 1) Not allowing #QuoteToot s & 2) Not publicizing boost/like counts to others.
That's why likes serve almost no purpose. Also, no #QuoteToots suppresses sharing great ideas b/c you can neither add context to a boosted comment nor add your own commentary to another toot.
I've heard the arguments about those things amplifying trolls or creating pile-ons but the "fixes" squash way more good ideas, IMO.

(We really need quote-toots. I question your commitment to making Mastodon a safe place for people if you honestly believe that they would be abused by the community.)
