Great example of the to stimulate good responses, great engagement.

“You ever had a experience but it was funny tho.”

The many great replies show everyday racism (it’s quite tiring), but also shows how propaganda and indoctrination is a deliberate system. This was one such reply.

Hmm... on ProDOS-formatted 5.25" floppy, you get 273 tweets in easy mode (280 blocks minus ProDOS overhead and one tweet per 512-byte block). It could expand to 499 if you used all the space in every block.

You get 1593 in easy mode if you use a GCR 800k disk, and 2872 if you use a MFM disk (because you have 2 bitmap blocks now).

One more reason to not implement a option:

If you mute a loud, obnoxious celebrity on , you'll still see their (hidden) post taking up space inside a .

If you mute a person on , you won't see these because they can't exist. At least, not yet.

Saw a garbage toot. (A really self serving BS toot. Oh man.)

Took a screenshot.

Worked up the alt text.

Wrote a snarky comment. (Their toot was stupendously, galactically dumb. I used both barrels.)

Then I deleted it.

If we do have to have quote toots they need to take at least that many steps to accomplish.

I didn’t think so before but I was stupid then & I’m enlightened now.

@burningtarot It's a whole thing. They did not implement what on twitter was known as a quote tweet because although it's often, maybe even usually, used in a benign & helpful way, it could also be used in a way that instigated pile-ons, shaming, & abuse. It's possible to share a link to a mastodon post and comment in your post about the link, or screenshot it & share it, but I have seen one person ask someone not to do that with their posts, so idk. See ,

Easily my favorite feature in is the preview of links to tweets/toots and the accompanying Quote this Post function. An elegant and simple way to solve the silly debate. Take note @Gargron!!

Honestly, I disagree with you on . I really hate it when I see what is obviously a reply but I have no idea what is being replied to. The web client doesn't give you a way to display the post that is being replied to. So you feel like you have just wandered into a room in the middle of a conversation but have no idea of what is being talked about. If I hadn't included tht hastags above, I'm sure some people would feel the same way when reading this toot.

TL;DR - In my Twitter experience, Quote Tweet doesn't create a problem, but indexing it in the UI gives trolls a handy list of who disagrees. That's when I think they went bad.

(Moreover, I don't think you can avoid them because you can always just drop the URL of something you want to comment on into a message. So we're talking about forbidding a particular formatting of a thought, not the content. That's kind of weird...)

This is a feature that has been common on Tumblr, Discord, etc for quite some time. It's useful for chiming in on a discussion in a way that your continuation becomes new content on your own page.

I know a lot of people are worried it will be used toxicly, and it will, but like with all things Mastodon, we have so many methods to contain that, including letting users and admins disable it, and systems which slow the spread of toxicity (moderation, filters, decentralization) rather than speed it ("the algorithm").

A worse situation is what WILL happen if it's not added to the central repo: someone will make a patch which implements it on the server level, and we'll see servers with their own internal system that isn't linked up to greater fediverse: you will have no control over who embed-quotes your post, and may not even be able to see it happening.

This isn't . Don't assume it'll be the same.

I've come up with the perfect solution for that should satisfy everyone. We simply have two kinds: Comment Boosts for regular usage, and Harassment Boosts for harassment and encouraging harassment. The latter form is opt out on the user and server level. Then moderators can simply harshly penalize anyone who uses Comment Boosts for harassment and everyone will be happy!

So I did some quick tabulation of uses on today's Twitter to assist the debate on Mastodon.

In curated lists of experts and news sources, QT's are frequent and generally positive.

In a trending topic on climate change, QT's were infrequent even though the conversation was generally hostile.

In a trending topic on Ben Shapiro, a prominent public figure on Twitter, dunking predominated.

The sad truth about implementing in is that its very FIRST use will certainly be someone abusing it to dunk on a post enumerating the legitimately good reasons for implementing quote posting 😪

should implement but with "no participation link". You can read thread but not comment. You can still find the thread on the author account of course and say something toxic, but every additional click takes half of the stream out

MY DRUNK QUESTION on - there's a lot of people yelling about it and I'm new and don't really care either way but one of the concerns seems to be it enables brigading. I def. see that on Twitter. I'm not sure how much that's a risk on the more distributed Fediverse esp. when reach is limited by boosting/followers and there's no oligarchorithm fucking with you. so it seems like that risk is overstated.

Am I full of shit?

So it sounds like many of the people here that would really love the feature, don't yet understand that we already have it.

It's just a bit less convenient, and it seems buggy on some apps.

The compromise is probably going to be moving to an instance that is specifically designed to have Twitter-like QT, or just using the app's copy link button, and pasting in a new toot.

One extra click seems to be a good balance to prevent a viral spin into madness, but not so bad as to take away your ability.
