Selecting the irradiated (one of the chapter titles of my book):

The US conducted 1,054 nuclear weapon tests.

88% were conducted inside the US at the Nevada Test Site.

8% were conducted in the Marshall Islands.

This chart shows that the US concentrated the much larger hydrogen bomb tests in the Marshall Islands, and that the 8% of tests there released far more blast, heat and radiation than the domestic tests.

This is a form of nuclear colonialism.

Castle Bravo (1 Mar 1954) was the first hydrogen bomb exploded atmospherically at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The fallout cloud (that they said they couldn't predict) irradiated four atolls inhabited by Marshall Islanders. They knew. It was a deliberate attempt to study the effects of irradiation across several generations. The US govt has always maintained that it was an accident, but given the perfect case study they managed to cobble together it is clear they experimented on the islanders.

Lines like this: "Recognizing the damage its testing caused, the U.S. government established two trust funds in the 1980s to help pay for Bikinians’ health care, build housing and cover living costs."

Clearly there are problems, and many are tied to post-colonial social disruptions along with permanently irradiated homelands, but this article is an example of victim blaming.

Today is Nuclear Victims and Survivors Remembrance Day in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. This commemorates the aftermath of the Bravo test of an h-bomb by the US in 1954 at Bikini Atoll. Hundreds of Marshallese children and adults developed radiation sickness and later radiogenic diseases because of exposures to this fallout cloud. Here it is 30 minutes after the test, beginning to spread deadly levels of radiation across the mid-Pacific.

The US later calculated that the fallout from Bravo could have killed tens of millions of human beings. Today, multiple Marshallese atolls are still too contaminated for permanent habitation. The US followed up this radiological disaster by testing five more h-bombs in the Marshall Islands over the next several months. It was treated as a nuclear sacrifice zone, and for the Marshallese, the Cold War was a limited nuclear war.

"US nears new cooperation deals with Pacific Island nations"

US continues to dismiss responsibility for radiological contamination from testing H-bombs in the Marshall Islands, or any obligation for remediation.

"Many on the Marshall Islands believe a U.S. settlement of $150 million agreed to in the 1980s fell well short of addressing the nuclear legacy. But the U.S. position has remained static for more than 20 years, the last time the compact came up for renegotiation.

Various estimates put the true cost of the damage at about $3 billion, including for repairs to a massive nuclear waste facility known as the Cactus Dome which environmentalists say is leaking toxic waste into the ocean.

The U.S. Department of Energy says the dome contains over 100,000 cubic yards (76,000 cubic meters) of radioactively contaminated soil and debris but the structure isn’t in any immediate danger of failing."

"Ken Brownell, who was a carpenter when he served in the military in the late 1970s, was sent to the Marshall Islands in 1977 to build a base camp for hundreds of soldiers assigned to cleanup operations. These cleanup efforts involved a concrete dome that was built on #Runit Island, one of 40 islands that make up #Enewetak Atoll, which was used to deposit soil and debris contaminated by radiation.

The goal, Brownell said, was supposedly to make the area habitable again for the Marshallese people after all the #nuclear testing that happened during the US occupation.
