Vaughan Williams Live Vol. 1
BBC SO, RPO, Sir Malcolm Sargent

Essential listening. Searing, surging, stinging accounts of The Wasps and No. 6 show what a superb Vaughan Williams conductor Sargent was. The premiere performance of No. 9 is a model of how to approach a masterpiece that's still much misunderstood today.

Good morning 🎶

Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)
Symphony No. 8
BBC Orchestra, Leopold Stokowski

The old magician conducts this fabulous performance from 1964. Many people don't realise that was English.

Wow! Here's the Portuguese premiere of Vaughan Williams's No. 9; Pedro de Freitas Branco conducting the National Symphony Orchestra on 20th December 1958, four months after the composer's death. The sound on this video is pretty rough but stick with it because the performance is very good indeed!

The composer conducts: Ralph Vaughan williams directing A London Symphony in 1946 and No. 5 in two performances including the world premiere from 1943. Well, most of it anyway: it was preserved only in an off-air recording of the radio broadcast with side-breaks every five minutes. Nevertheless, with the epic Dona Nobis Pacem this adds up to a momentous . @classicalmusic @britishcomposers
