"The Parkes radio telescope Murriyang, which helped broadcast the moon landing in 1969, has played a central role in another scientific discovery.
CSIRO scientists working at Murriyang have been observing an array of nano hertz frequency pulsars for almost 20 years. They are ripples in space time [gravitational waves] that are nearly the same size as the Milky Way.
The longevity of the experiment is due to the waves being years or even decades in length." #science #astrophysics #physics #astronomy #RadioAstronomy #RadioTelescope #Australia #Parkes #Murriyang ##GravitationalWaves #MilkyWay #pulsars #telescope #CSIRO

China’s FAST boosts tourism, income in astronomy-themed town: https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202305/1291357.shtml - China’s giant #RadioTelescope lures travelers, improving local livelihoods. (Beware, that's an official point of view ... but interesting nonetheless.)
The simulated #SETI message sent via the #TraceGasOrbiter and received by three #RadioTelescope|s yesterday can now be downloaded via https://asignin.space/the-message/ (beware, each file is 4G!) while decoding attempts can be uploaded at https://asignin.space/decode-the-message/ - good luck everyone!

One of the world’s most powerful #RadioTelescope arrays is joining the hunt for signals from other galactic civilizations: https://www.seti.org/press-release/massive-radio-array-search-extraterrestrial-signals-other-civilizations - the National Science Foundation’s Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (#VLA), situated about 50 miles west of Socorro, New Mexico, is collecting data that scientists will analyze for the type of emissions that only artificial transmitters make, signals that would betray the existence of a technically accomplished society. #SETI
China's five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical #RadioTelescope (#FAST) has discovered more than 740 new #pulsars so far, said Jiang Peng, chief scientist of FAST and a deputy to the National People's Congress, at the deputies' passage of the first session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) today: https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202303/1286812.shtml

50 years ago #OTD the very first scientific paper based on observations with the 100-meter #radiotelescope in #Effelsberg, Germany, was published - it dealt with #pulsars; see https://www.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/announcements/2022/4 for some context.

Work is about to start on the construction of more than 100,000 antennas on Wajarri country in remote WA, enabling astronomers to peek billions of years back to the ‘cosmic dawn’. The Square Kilometre Array radio telescope, called SKA-Low, will listen to very low frequencies and work with SKA-mid which is to be built in South Africa.
It will be the most sensitive radio telescope ever built. Over 1000 people have worked on the project over the last 30 years to get it to the point where construction can start.

Due to their precision, pulsars could act as navigational beacons for interstellar travel.
Because graduate student contributions to discoveries were not recognised at the time, Jocelyn's male PhD supervisor was awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering pulsars in 1974, considered one of the most important astronomical discoveries of the 20th century. (2/2)

#OnThisDay in 1967, Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovered pulsars using radio wave data collected by a #RadioTelescope at Cambridge University.
#Pulsars (‘Pulsating Radio Stars’) are dense dead stars that spin rapidly, emitting regular bursts of radio waves.
At first mistaken by her PhD supervisor as evidence of intelligent life, Bell Burnell double-checked miles of printouts, confirming that the signals were radio waves from spinning stars. (1/2)

Ideas like this are great for those who live in the US or other places that have had ubiquitous satellite TV infra in the past. An old TV dish is half a #RadioTelescope right away.
Most houses I've lived in had only a basic antenna, but I asked around among my friends and two of them have come through.
It's time for ✨ Tiny Telescope! ✨
