Stuttgart’s ever-receding station is Germany’s latest transport fiasco.

The ambitious plan for a new station in the capital of Baden-Württemberg, one of Germany’s most prosperous states and home to Daimler-Benz, Bosch and Porsche, was to be an advertisement for the state’s engineering prowess.

Meant to be completed by the end of 2019 at a cost of €4.5bn, it is now forecast to be finished by 2025, for nearly €12bn.

A night train linking Berlin and Paris will return in December, nine years after the service was cancelled, the Austrian rail operator ÖBB has announced.

ÖBB will make Mannheim a hub for night trains, with its Brussels-Vienna and Paris-Vienna services also making stops in the city.

ÖBB has been a pioneer in bringing back night trains as Europeans look for low-carbon travel options.

While some people prefer this mode of transport, experts have said that reducing tax breaks for airlines and subsidies was needed to make it more affordable.

“It doesn’t make sense if you look at the goals," train travel analyst Bernhard Knierim told Euronews.
