Here in Queensland they like their rails close together... that's a gauge of just 1,067mm (3ft 6in). Tight.

Arrived at Cairns, completing my and @NarrelleMHarris's 1,681 kilometre trip by rail from Brisbane. Good to be back! Last time I was here was in pandemic times, sat out Melbourne's fifth lockdown here by sheer chance. Crazy days.

We're killing time in the Goondi Hill Hotel in Innisfail, because [amazement] the Spirit of Queensland train is yet again running over two hours late on its way to Cairns.

This pub was chosen entirely on the basis on being close to the station, and is a very old-school place with old blokes propping up the front bar and a bistro out the back.

We're about to give the chef's pumpkin soup a try, the bar staff tell us it's based on his grandma's recipe.

Just realised this section of the railway from Townsville to Cairns is new territory for me - in my book Heading South I had to fly over this stretch because the railway was flooded.

I like the seating at the Spirit of Queensland's cafe car; much better than the cafe areas on New South Wales' XPT trains, which have no seating at all. Not a bad range of food and drink either, and fairly inexpensive.
