Monday #MorningMusic (5 Dec 2022) is another fundamental from #RandyNewman's first album.

I've wracked my brain for decades about why Bette Midler's cover bugs the hell out of me, and maybe it's that her style lifts her above the words, which works for something like "From a Distance", while Newman seems to inhabit them. It's always been a more interesting approach to me when the lyrics support it.

#MorningMusic for 2 December 2022 is probably one of the most basic numbers in the #RandyNewman songbook, as presented on his first album.

Here's how he summed it up in the notes for his late-90s box set: "It's about someone with a dream so modest that it hardly counts as a dream. Listening to it now--I'm 30 years older--it seems like a lot to ask for."
