Well I finally got around to installing #RaspberryPiOS on the #SurfaceRT tablet. Outside of seemingly an h264 codec issue, it's running pretty well. Not fast, but well. It managed to run overleaf okay through chromium so in theory I could use it for work.

Also one major "can't use" for me - regardless of #ChipShortages and #Scalpers - is the lack of a convenient #LUKS #Encryption setup in both #RaspberryPiOS and @ubuntu / #Ubuntu for @Raspberry_Pi / #RaspberryPi.

Not gonna argue the lack of @tails or official @torproject #TorBrowser but to make #FullDiskEncryption viable and useable, it just can't be restricted to external media or having to manually fiddle around, cuz that's a pain in the rear.

Personally I just tend to install @ubuntu / #UbuntuLTS on most systems as it's a #64bit distro (#RaspberryPiOS is only available for #ARM, #ARM64 & #i386) and comes with support for basically everything anyone ever asked for - including #Steam.
@bunsenlabs is my go-to distro to use on #lowend systems.

@billgoats I recommend something like a #hp #T620 #ThinClient for those that want to poke with #Linux on the #Desktop.
You can get one used with 4 GB RAM, WiFi and power supply for less than a @Raspberry_Pi #Pi4B2GB or #CM4WLite1GB at MSRP.
It'll run anything from #RaspberryPiOS for #ix86 and #lightweight #Linux distros like @bunsenlabs #BunsenLabsLinux to @ubuntu #UbuntuServer LTS and even @tails #Tails.
Tho #UbuntuDesktop will feel very slow on it.
But with something like #Porteus it's fine.

Durch den Umzug weg vom #Raspberry auf den #ThinClient habe ich etwa denselben Stromverbrauch, die Festplatte (#SSD) ist nicht mehr über USB angeschlossen und das Ganze sieht nicht mehr aus wie "Bastelplatine mit Kabelbinder an USB Platte getackert".

Ich habe jetzt statt #RaspberryPiOS ein "richtiges" x86-64 Linux, was die Softwareauswahl und Updates vereinfacht.

I wanted to use the "bat" command on Raspberry Pi OS and installed it but I couldn't run it. For some reason, the command for "bat" on Raspberry Pi OS is "batcat" ..

Wow, apparently they removed the default pi user on #RaspberryPiOS, forcing one to run a setup wizard after flashing. Cool when ssh'ing in doesn't work. So does that mean one can't set up a #RaspberryPi with #RaspberryPiOS without monitor and keyboard anymore? 🤔

The Rasperry Pi imager sounds cool but hangs indefinitely on „removing old data from SD card”, so doesn't help.

finally got the gravity update via cronjob working. Default cronjob on #RaspberryPiOS did not work out of the box. I had to define the absolute path (defining PATH as a prefixed env did not work), call the command as the “default” user and instead of “pihole updateGravity” call “pihole -g”.

Ich habe #RaspberryPiOS auf meinem altersschwachen #eeePC installiert. Das läuft erstaunlich rund. Starten und Installieren dauert halt einfach ewig und vieles geht halt wegen der geringen Auflösung nicht. Allerdings hat der eeePC auch ne SSD und 2GB RAM spendiert bekommen. Mit ner HDD würde ich dieses Experiment nicht wagen. #retrocomputing #linux

@KarlHeinzHasliP or just start them off with a @Raspberry_Pi #Pi400 Kit if one can afford it.

If not, some #refurbished PC/Laptop with some beginner-friendly distro [I'd recommend @ubuntu #UbuntuLTS for both the community and commercial support (incl. 3rd party apps and games)]...

And if you're really tight on budget, you may find some old #ThinClient or #Netbook that'll run fine with @bunsenlabs #BunsenLabsLinux and/or #RaspberryPiOS...

@nano #RaspberryPiOS has the advantage of having the same apps on #i386 as the Rasperry Pi, which makes sense due to @Raspberry_Pi #Pi4B's and #CM4's being scalped af.

#BunsenLabs even works on systems with no GPU as software renderer at good speeds.

As of #Ubuntu LTS: You have the advantage of affordable Support and 5 years of guaranteed updates from day of release free of charge.
