I finished my first Korean short story of the week, it was so engrossing I couldn’t put it down! It’s from one of my most recent purchases, a collection of horror stories that won the literary contest 기기괴괴공모전.
The short story I read is the winner: 탈피, 키스 by 백해인 (Baek Haein). It’s about a woman whose life becomes miserable because of a skin condition, and how far she’ll go to get rid of it.
I finished the short story 우산이 나타났다 by 범유진 (Beom Yujin), it was on the difficult side in terms of language level and quite sad too.
A much lighter read is my current Korean novel, 김 대리가 죽었대 by 서경희 (Seo Gyeonghui). I read chapter 3 today, and it was very funny!

I finished the short story 작당모의 카페 사진 동아리의 육교 미스테리 by 김영민 (Kim Yeongmin). It was a nice mystery centred around a photograph and an accident that took place some time ago.
This short story was mainly based on dialogues, so even though it was 65 pages long, it read fast and didn’t feel too difficult!
I finished 어느날 개들이 by 강지영 (Kang Jiyeong), I chose it because it’s short, but it was one of the most difficult short stories I have read so far. I don’t even think that it was that difficult in terms of language level, but somehow I had a rough time going through it.
I tried to read another book by this author last year, and it was a DNF for me. Maybe I just don’t understand the author’s style…
Anyway, I finished my 2nd short story for this week, my #ReadingChallenge is safe 😌.

I finished the Korean short story 내 세상의 챔피언 by 그린레보 (Geurinrebo).
It was a nice mystery of two sisters investigating what could be an attempted murder.
This was the first short story for this week, and I only have the weekend left to read a second one, so I’ll try to pick a short (and hopefully easy) one!

I finished 천사가 모터사이클을 타고 내려오다 by Kwak Jaesik. It’s from the collection (사설탐정사의 밤) and takes place during the elections of January 1949. Candidates might try to interfere with their rivals’ campaign, and that’s when our private detective comes into play!
#FountainPen
I used my TWSBI for my notes today, one of my first fountain pens, but I don’t use it very often lately. It’s inked with Dominant Industry Autumn Forest, a darkish olive green with pink shimmer.

Already finished the #Korean short story of this week. It was excellent, and I finished it in one sitting.
초록 비가 내리는 집 by 이주혜 (Lee Juhye) from the collection 여름 기담.
The goal of my #ReadingChallenge was to improve my Korean and go through my collection of unread books. The problem is that I keep buying more books, at a pace that far exceeds my reading plan of one short story per week.
It’s between buying less and reading more so… my challenge is now two short stories per week!
I finished the Korean short story I was reading this week!
중고차 파는 여자 by 윤자영 (Yun Jayeong) is an entertaining story about car dealer fraud and a case of hit-and-run.
Thanks to the story, I learnt the Korean word for hit-and-run: 뺑소니.
I only started this week Korean short story today, but I’m already halfway through it and it’s very good so far :)
중고차 파는 여자 by 윤자영 (Yun Jayeong).
I’ve also read some pages of my Chinese book. There was a long difficult part that is now over, and I went through the next pages relatively easily.
I finished the Korean short story for this week!
It was 506호의 요상한 신음 by 김재희: A man starts to investigate strange sounds coming from next door apartment, thinking it might be linked to illegal activities…
With this I finished the collection 위층집. All four stories are linked around the topic of noisy neighbours, they were all entertaining and relatively easy to read, but my favourite story is by far the one by 윤자영 (Yun Jayeong) 🥰.
For this week #Korean short story, I’ll finish the collection about noisy neighbours. The last short story is 506호의 요상한 신음 by 김재희 (Kim Jaehee).
Kim Jaehee is the author of a detective series taking place in the 1930s (경성 탐정 이상) which I would love to be able to read one day. (It is a bit difficult for me to read and enjoy, and I get discouraged very easily when it comes to Korean, so I’ll stick with my short stories challenge for now and hope that my level will improve!)
Finished the Korean short story of this week! 특별 수업 by 김선민 (Kim Seonmin).
It is a story of bullying with an interesting theme of victim/perpetrator, but the genre of the story was not for me overall.
For this week #ReadingChallenge in #Korean, I started the collection of short stories I bought last weekend: 괴이, 학원.
It’s a collection of horror stories by different authors with the common topic of “hagwon” (private institutes - cram schools - massively attended by children and students in S. Korea).
The first story is 나를 구해줘 by 배명은 (Bae Myeongeun).
This little gem of a book by @petermball from @brainjarpress is a great summary if you're a new writer getting your head into the writing game with a long term vision of making writing a career.
You know you love writing, but do you know how to sustain it? Peter gives you a guide into getting a few steps into the darkness of the abyss and feeling your way around.

This week’s Korean short story will be 소리 사이 by Yang Sooryon (양수련).
This short story comes from a collection of mystery/horror stories with “noisy neighbours” as a common topic.
I read the first two stories (both very good!) when I bought the book, but I haven’t touched it for a while now. Hopefully this challenge will help me to finish it.
For this week’s #Korean short story, I’ve decided to start this collection of linked short stories by Kwak Jaesik (곽 재식).
The stories take place in 1948 and 1949, so the very beginning of the First Republic of Korea.
It’s the first time I’m reading detective stories in this setting!

Finished the short story for this week! (네고시에이터 최보람 by 강지영). First week of my Korean reading challenge is going well :)
Unfortunately though, I didn’t like this short story at all. The protagonist is a negotiator who is handling a case of kidnapping. The kidnapper also has some kind of negotiator who happens to be our protagonist’s ex-boyfriend.
This story was really not for me, but I’m glad I completed my challenge for this week!
I am not reading much in Korean this year… Reading in Korean is really hard and discouraging for me, so it takes a lot of will power to start a book.
To get some motivation, I’ve decided to start a reading challenge in Korean: Read one short story per week!
I have several collections of short stories at home, so I have a lot of stories to choose from.
Starting this week with the 2nd story in this collection (I already read the first one).
As well as #20BooksOfSummer, I also joined in with #ReadingTheMeow this year. I read three #books about #cats over the weeklong #ReadingChallenge. All had their merits but weren't without flaws.
