She was the fourth woman director to have ever won the award since it started in 1949. Of the seven women to have won the prize, three have won it since 2020.

, 24 June 1916, Mary Pickford becomes the first Hollywood star to sign a million dollar contract.

Pickford was a queen of PR as well as the screen. Standard studio contracts were for a year. She signed for two years as both an actor and a producer, bumping the figure over the $1m barrier and getting all the headlines.

, 16 Apr 1912, Harriet Quimby becomes the first woman to fly a plane across the English Channel.

Quimby was the first American woman to receive a pilot’s licence and made her living doing exhibition flights in the US. She also made money as the advertising face of a grape juice and writing screenplays for silent shorts. She died in July 1912 when her plane pitched forward at 1,000 feet and she fell.

, 13 Apr 1933 Ruth Bryan Owen is appointed US ambassador to Denmark.

As well as being the first woman to be appointed as a US Ambassador, she had been the first woman elected to Congress by the state of Florida in 1928. Earlier in the 1920s she had been one of a number of women directing films in the silent era.

, 5 Feb 1919, Mary Pickford co-founds United Artists in Hollywood with fellow actor Douglas Fairbanks, actor and director Charlie Chaplin and director D W Griffith. Their hope was to circumvent the growing studio system by owning their own creative output.

Pickford was also the first Hollywood movie star to sign a million dollar contract.
