In a country as rich as #Canada, in #Halifax, a city of almost 500,000 staff are talking about having to learn how #refugee camps are run, if no improvement in #housing affordability& shelter. There are resources & legislation/regulation, there is just no political will at the provincial level & not enough $$$ at the federal. This must be treated as an ever escalating #CRISIS! Borders or liminal spaces are many times known as dangerous places, occasionally their liminality makes them a safe haven. During the height of the Syrian war, I wrote a little article for MPS about how the Israeli/Syrian border became a site of refuge.

I am an Assistant Professor of Global Studies at UC Santa Barbara, where I teach, write, organize, and walk along my favorite ocean.

My forthcoming book examines the migration and resettlement of about a million Muslim refugees from Russia's #NorthCaucasus in the #Ottoman Empire. I am working on a new project on Muslim displacement in the Middle East, the #Balkans, the #Caucasus, #CentralAsia, and #SouthAsia.

I am looking forward to building a new community with everyone here.

Hello everybody. Since I'm new here, first a little #introduction:
I work as a #historian at the School of Cultural Studies and Social Sciences/ Modern History and Historical Migration Research at Osnabrück University and am a member of the Institute of Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS).
My current work focuses on historical migration research, especially #forcedmigration after the Second World War and the emergence of the modern #refugee regime. Regionally, my focus is on #LatinAmerica and Europe. I am currently conducting a research project on the evolution of the refugee regime after World War II and #Venezuela 's role in its emergence.
