“THE INHERITANCE is, then, a novel concerned with questions of morality and education, but also national identity, the differences between Scottish and English cultures, and the stereotypes within human nature that both divide and unite the two. It is also very funny”

“Miss Ferrier avowedly made thumb-nail sketches,—as is proved in one of the few surviving letters to or from her,—out of which grew the merciless caricatures that created her fame”

We republished Susan Ferrier’s MARRIAGE in 2020—using the text of the acid-sharp 1819 edition rather than the sentimentalised Victorian version of 1842. Read the first chapter free online here:

Susan Ferrier (1782–1854) was born #OTD, 7 Sept. Her 3 novels—Marriage, The Inheritance, & Destiny—are vivid & humorous accounts of Scottish society. Often compared to her contemporary #JaneAusten, Ferrier’s satires are much more vicious…

#Georgian adventures in #Bath today at No 1 Royal Crescent. The house is furnished in #Regency style, with audio/video in each room telling the story of a family who lived there during ‘the season’. I couldn’t resist visiting the ‘Georgrobe’ afterwards to try on a period costume. Much grander than most of my ancestors, although one of my 7 x great-grandfathers, “an eminent butcher of Bristol”, married his second wife in Bath Abbey in 1776, so perhaps I’m suitably dressed for that occasion!
Was machen die Adligen auf und vor allem nach dem Ball in Northlake Hall? Können sie mehr über den seltsamen Korridor heraus finden und was es mit dem Geheimnis der Northlakes auf sich hat?

I just finished A Lady's Guide to Fortune-Hunting by Sophie Irwin. This was a charming (and buttoned-up) #Regency #romance, featuring one of the most hilarious himbos I've had the pleasure to read about.
Stellar, sharp writing, a truly believable romance, great character development, and, of course, the opportunity to vaguely remember stuff I learned in 1L Property class. PG-13, so you can give it to family/coworkers without the risk of awkward eye contact later.
I got inked on Tuesday. 😁 Going back in early September to get it finished.
