Ok mastodon, who knows about #RegenerativeAg as a solution for #carbonSequestration - yay or nay?
Points for good references to scientific studies...

I am planning on networking with this additional grant specifically targeted for the Regenerative Agriculture Program, certainly as a participant in any workshops, but also perhaps as a mentor to student research projects that will soon be underway https://www.csuchico.edu /regenerativeagriculture/blog/rcpp-grant-2021.shtml

Seems like #carbonsequestration via #RegenerativeAgriculture is a win-win. Is this a realistic solution or PR? #ClimateAction #climatechange

Greening the Desert with #RegenerativeAgriculture
This is a high desert landscape in western #Colorado at 6400ft. that has been rejuvenated and made productive via beaver mimicry and bison mimicry by raising cattle.

This is why #RegenerativeAgriculture is such a critical need for properly addressing #ClimateChange. We need to stop tilling soil, which dries it out faster. And we need to start getting compost and mulch to retain soils moisture instead. All of which mitigates both drought and flooding impacts expected for the farmers while drawing down carbon from the atmosphere and preventing an additional 0.5C of warming via soil moisture-atmosphere coupling.
Tell your leaders!!

With its unsurpassed growth rate, #bamboo yields more biomass and captures more atmospheric carbon per acre than anything. So if your goal is to remove carbon from the sky and add it to the soil, the collaboration between bamboo and #biochar is hard to beat.
Hack the carbon cycle!

I'm watching this discussion on EVs and #Decarbonization of the power grid and the economy in general, and quite frankly, I don't see how it's possible. #Degrowth needs to be the leading response to the #ClimateEmergency followed by #RegenerativeAgriculture

High Tech solutions simply require too much #Limited resources.
Just to reach 30% decarbonization would require at least 39 years of #lithium production & 19 years of #cobalt production at 2019 levels

While I endorse totally #RegenerativeAgriculture being more sustainable agricultural practices a key part of the puzzle on how to solve the multiple crisis we are facing, I am one of the serious looking guys that always call for caution with the hyperbolic claims.
Many people in the #RegAg community grossly exagerate its potential to attract funding and popularity.
It could be argued that this is ok, since RegAg is definitely an improvement compared to what we have now, but there are several biophysical limitations that will not allow RegAg alone to save the world.
a) in order to apply large amounts of compost, first you need to produce a lot of biomass.
b) Soil Organic Matter (SOM) is not a stable thing. It degrades progressi ely after some decades (yes, there are claims that "with RegAg-technique X SOM gets stabilized", but they didn't study this in long-term experiments)
c) in agriculture, there is no one-size-fits-all. E.g. if you wonder why in warmer, drier climates there is little SOM, it might be for some reason and not only because of bad agricultural practices.
d) Regenerative Agriculture needs to strengthen the focus on social and economic issues. Team up with the #Agroecology movement, as only an #ecosocialTransformation will give farmers the structure to achieve #FoodSovereignity while caring the planet.
So, promote Regenerative Agriculture, but be careful with the claims, as it won't help if in some years people will identify us as liars having promised too much.
Sorry for being boring 🤓

I should clarify. The #CarbonCapture draw down from #RegenerativeAgriculture compost is 1 metric ton/acre of rangeland - So potential for 62 million tons of drawdown in CA. This carbon is stored stably in the #soil vs soil carbon lost on untreated range land.
The 55 tons/acre is net emissions reduction achieved by upstream diversion of traditionally high-emissions waste management practices
#carboncapture #RegenerativeAgriculture #soil
Argh. $1 BILLION for #CarbonCapture, 1/2 of it to a #FossilFuel company. The as yet unproven claim is 2 million metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere every year. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/carbon-capture-projects-get-1-billion-in-new-federal-funding/
The Marin Carbon Project has proven that a single application of 1/4" compost on range land would draw down 55 metric tons/acre every year for 30+ years. There are 62 million acres of rangeland in CA alone. $1B would go a LOT further with #RegenerativeAgriculture benefitting farmers instead of oil companies.

@epistatacadam indeed. #RegenerativeAgriculture is the easiest, fastest, cheapest, least energy/resource dependent solution to draw down CO2 while simultaneously building resilience to climate impacts.
It's criminal that it doesn't get much policy attention. And I'm frustrated that so many environmentalists erroneously demonize meat because of natural ruminant stomach carbon cycling. That just makes farmers unwilling to listen and change.
The best part? #RegenerativeAgriculture as a #ClimateSolution doesn't require any resources aside from education. It actually reduces the labor, fossil fuels required to plow, fertilizer needs, herbicide and pesticide use, etc.
Once farmers adopt #NoTill and see the benefits, they usually go on to more and more #Permaculture solutions. Eventually adding animals like poultry and sheep that weed and fertilize for them while adding additional revenue streams for #resiliency to markets.

#RegenerativeAgriculture should be one of the highest priorities right now. It's win-win all around. Sequesters a LOT of carbon while significantly mitigating the effects of climate change on food production.
“But most people think that you must till during a heatwave to get water to the vine.”
... but Casteel’s Bethel Heights no-till cover crop soils were 60 degrees cooler than those at the estate next door, who, she recorded, “had ploughed just before the heatwave.”
Domaine Lafage Winery in #France is the first in the region to harvest grapes this year amid widespread #drought. They credit #RegenerativeAgriculture.
“We are seeing some great results in vineyards in regenerative viticulture & all the places where we are using biochar & cover crops. In these places, instead of losing 60% of the crop [due to desiccation], we are seeing maybe a 25-30% reduction [in yields], & we see fresh grapes & bigger berries."

These tomatoes are a product of Fukuoka's #DoNothingFarming method.
They are harvested from volunteer plants that pop up in the weeds growing in our pig pasture plantings. We carefully seed our pig's slops with our favorite rustic local varieties, some of which have been developed here on our farm.
Every week we harvest pots and pots from seed that our pigs worked into the soil. How awesome is that?

When I share pictures of the plantings, I'm always disappointed by how they fail to convey the effort and planning that go into rehabilitating and #reforesting land that should have never been turned into pasture. In these pictures you can see (if you look really closely) bananas, plantain, cacao, theobroma bicolor, and Lulo. Most of the #FoodForest is still in its infancy, but everything is coming in so nicely.
