Hard to read this and not cheer for Luther. (That said, I tend to cheer for Luther in general, save for when he's being an ad hominem asshole which is admittedly not infrequently)

Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities, citing Febvre and Martin's The Coming of The Book

The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart marched at Selma in 1965 & the Women's March in 2018 + they've never stopped fighting for justice.

If you'd like to use Rebel Hearts about these radical nuns to teach with film in your classroom, my friends at Journeys in Film put together a free teaching guide for the film. (It's free for everyone, not just teachers.)

Get it here journeysinfilm.org/product/reb

I’ve been researching aspects of paganism for much of my life, but regularly still come across odd survivals and remnants. The imaginative excesses of 19th and 20th century research are, if anything, less interesting than reality.

For instance, many churches from the late Medieval and early Renaissance periods had rooms called (ex)conjuratories where priests drew on the power of the true cross to perform rituals warding off weather, disease, etc. from the community. Here’s a Spanish conjuratory ‘prayer’:

“Stay, O cloud, stay put, don't fall over me;
save the bread, save the wine,
preserve the fields in blossom”
