Just to get into it a little, I'm angry about attacks on #trans and #queer communities and #ReproductiveJustice Political developments in Big #AI and how it's already hurting masses of people without any kind of accountability or even acknowledgement, etc.

friendly reminder that #reproductiveJustice and abortion access aren't solely women's issues - #trans men and some #nonbinary folks need this care too, and higher conflation of these things with "women" can drive us away from seeking care.

instead, say things like "pregnant people," "people who menstruate," "people who can become pregnant," or other language that focuses on the specific risk factor relevant to the conversation.

This week marks 6 years since I started working at the National Network of Abortion Funds, where I started in 2017 as the first IT hire in the organization's 25+ year history. I've since built a highly capable 5-person IT department as the organization quadrupled in size, and I'm incredibly proud of the work we've done.

When I first saw the job posting I was working as a senior pentester at a private security company. NNAF had suffered a major and costly cybersecurity breach the previous year, and figured they oughta hire a dedicated IT manager, ideally someone with security chops. I honestly didn't seriously consider the role at first and only submitted a resumé on a whim; after all it was a 50% pay cut and I was perfectly happy at my current job. But once I interviewed with them I got to understand that unlike so many non-profits who talked the talk of reproductive justice, NNAF actually walked the walk when it came to operating from a radical values-first approach. It sounded like a great fit for both my political and technical interests, so I took the job.

Since joining the organization, I've had the pleasure to work with some of the most inspiring and effective organizers I've ever met. NNAF has had it's fair share of issues and definitely still does, but these last 6 years have shown me that even within the limits of the non-profit structure you can do really powerful and liberatory work. I've grown significantly, both professionally and politically.

Now with the overturn of Roe, we are facing a new legal landscape along with shifting threat models that more and more include law enforcement and state agencies. Work is stressful, funders are backing out, and relationships are strained. But the work to make abortion accessible has never been more important, and I'm committed to the fight. It's a wild time to be in this work, especially from an information security perspective. I'm not sure what the future holds, but I'm sure glad I acted on that whim 6 years ago and applied for the job.
