I have particularly struggled with a definition of research software, and although it helped to attend the #RSE #ResearchSoftwareEngineer society conference last Autumn, questions remain. Your definition states that research software is that which has been created during the research process or for a research purpose. While I agree with the latter, the former suggest that e.g. a text-parsing script created during a research project is research software?

This paper by Strasser et al. on "Ten Simple Rules for funding scientific software" is a great encapsulation of things to think about around funding scientific software. I really appreciated Rules 2-4 on inclusion, the different roles in a project, and promoting community. Also, it is a great collection of references on the topic.
