I need to make a #resume and cover letter for a job I very much want. I have made many resumes in the past but feel like I still don't really know how to do this. now that search is broken on the web, I'm not sure where to turn for real advice online about format. is there a non-scam source somewhere for resume and cover letter formats? thanks!
What time and relevant experience should professionals list on their resumé? I am trying to redo my resumé to be more mindful and truthful, but I am a little confused and invite your help.
1. When I was working on Wall Street last millennium, I initially put in time and effort, learning the code base, putting it under source control ( can you believe much of Wall Street didn't use source control then? ), and refactoring it to my satisfaction. I came up with a bold new architecture, and made a case for it. It was shot down. Resistance to change was strong in the culture. This didn't affect my spirits. I would come in the morning, do 0-2 hours of work, mostly writing tests, and doing unnecessary optimizations. Then I would sneak out, get some spicy Jerk Chicken and a Ginger Beer from a street cart, and then nap on a concrete slab. The modern architecture of the street included a fountain, next to which I napped, because it made a soothing white noise that drowned out Manhattan. My suit got crumpled, but I didn't mind. I was making $800/day in 1997. ( How much is that in today's wages? ) I would have a freshly pressed suit waiting for me after my company provided limo ride home.
I didn't really do much coding at work for over a year. Should I leave this time on my resumé?
2. There was a time for several months, when I was bedridden after a quadruple bypass open heart surgery. My chest had been sawed open, and I was not allowed to move. For the next several months, I spent countless hours alone in a bed, immobilized, programming in my mind to keep the pain, boredom, and insomniac loneliness from overwhelming me. The source code would appear in mind, in the same glowing font all the time. I could scroll through it in mind, without ever touching a computer. I would edit it, run it, trace through it, correct mistakes, curse, forget it, remember it, over and over. It had to be #Perl. Sweet, concise Perl. There's no space for some corporate-hyped, verbose, closed source bullshit like #Java in my head. Java is too formal and machine like. I'm a person, not a machine. In my head, I'm informal and naked with myself.
So I spent months programming 18 hours / day, 7 days a week, and was not employed during this time. Can I add that year's programming experience to my resumé?
Thanks in advance for answering my questions.

I'm keeping an eye out for entry-level #IT and #HelpDesk #jobs in the #Pittsburgh area. I'm a tech- and people-oriented individual who doesn't have much industry experience yet, but I'm a very fast learner; I was promoted at my current job only a year in! I am more than willing to work in-office (and actually prefer it, personally) so long as it's in the #PGH area.
