Have we all been gaslit about ? My latest vlog highlights the confusion between what we think we need to do and what the legislation actually requires of us. tiktok.com/@katelarsenkeys/vid

My words, thoughts and ponderings for March includes a reminder why less is (still) necessary, some thoughts on what the new National Cultural Policy could mean for South Australia, a call to ban book banning, and some (belated) New Year’s resolutions for Boards. katelarsenkeys.substack.com/p/

“We’re used to a governance model that tasks unpaid or low-paid Boards with oversight AND compliance AND strategic direction AND stewardship AND duty of care AND financial sustainability AND fundraising AND risk AND capacity building AND emergency response AND being ambassadors (AND more).”

It’s “depressingly clear that our sector has learned how to bend without breaking when it comes to arts governance. But if the cause of most of our Arts Boards’ dysfunction is the governance model itself, perhaps a break is what we need – to throw the model out and start again.”

“I honestly think we can come up with a better way to do the accountability, cheerleading, support, and advising that boards at their best should and could be doing,” Michael J Bobbitt writes in American Theatre. “The way we are currently operating isn’t working. I triple dog dare us all to use our imaginative skills to redesign it.” Read more at link in bio or larsenkeys.com.au/2022/12/04/b.

Governance training orgs make their living from not-for-profits that can’t afford to invest for each new generation of Board members – while turning over millions of dollars themselves.
With volunteerism decreasing, Board burnout on the rise, and those who see Board stints as easy CV stuffers, this never-ending investment is a fantastic business model – for the training providers, not the orgs they train.

For the time being, Australian arts governance is the ultimate expression of ‘one size fits all’ (even though it clearly doesn’t). Yes, the model is broken. No, we can’t really fix it yet. But that doesn’t mean we can’t make the best of a bad situation.
But as we search for urgent alternatives, there is some great emergent practice to get excited about. Read more in Part 2 of my report (larsenkeys.com.au/2022/12/04/b).

Awkward writerly announcement: I will be reducing my client workload in 2023 in order to write - with a dual focus on my debut poetry collection and independent research. So if my work has been of value to you, l'd appreciate you supporting me on Patreon (from just $2.50/m). Plus, if you become a patron before the end of 2022, I'll prescribe you a personal Summer Reading List based on genres and/or topics of your choice (larsenkeys.com.au/2022/12/06/p)

For many, the problems of arts governance are not a theoretical exercise. Nor something we can separate from our wellbeing (or lack thereof). Our work is in service to a community, to art, to the artists and arts workers who make it, the people who enjoy it, and the lives and minds it can change. We put ourselves into this space because we care - but we also need to take care of ourselves.

“It’s becoming increasingly clear that the validity of maternalistic charity governance in which well-meaning, (mostly) middle-class white women ‘serve’ communities or groups we don’t personally belong to has gone. As has the appetite for paternalistic corporate governance where well-meaning, (mostly) middle-class white men ‘educate’ not-for-profits on how things should be done.”
