In case anyone was wondering, the size of this hurricane-smooshed Sycamore #Platanus_occidentalis in #RhodeIsland isn’t necessarily apocryphal — there’s a similar-sized tree in Pennsylvania.

Just thinking about major hurricanes in New England for some reason today, and hey, 154 years to the day a Category 3 made landfall in #RhodeIsland ! Now, I wonder why a giant Sycamore (Plane to you Brits) happened to blow over in 1869, hmm…

Unless there is a larger #SpindleTree at #SwanPointCemetery it would appear this tree has a height of 62’ (18.9 m), circumference of 132” (3.35 m) and average crown spread of 50’ (15.2 m) — good grief!

Wow, had no idea #SpindleTree #Euonymus_europaeus got *this* big! Seen at #SwanPointCemetery in #Providence #RhodeIsland — I’ll have to get more precise measurements, this bad boy has got to be pushing 40 feet (~12 meters).

Went to press a leaf in an Ansel Adams book and forgot I had one in there already. I remembered that years ago I found a #KentuckyYellowWood #Cladrastis_kentukea growing quite unexpectedly in a nature preserve in #Barrington #RhodeIsland — I’ll have to remember to investigate this further! This #Tree species is not commonly cultivated in the area and I’ve never heard of escapees before.

Edit: I forgot to describe the image! It’s a compound leaf with 8 rounded leaflets, the last being largest.

Damn, looks like The Troll Shop in #EastGreenwich #RhodeIsland just went out of business. I never got around to buying a troll!

I appear to have been the second person to have seen a #HairyPinesap in #RhodeIsland on #iNaturalist — wild! The taxonomic status of these #nativeplants is unsettled (Variety? Subspecies? Full species?) but one thing is certain — they’re #parasiticplants that steal nutrients from fungi! They are in fact highly reduced Heaths (#Ericaceae ) and I suppose a bit of this still shows in their appearance.
