I think with electric guitar I lean more towards the instrumental jazz rock fusion than towards songs. For acoustic I like songs with great lyrics as well as great playing. I'd add #JohnMartyn to Joni, Paul Simon, Bruce Cockburn.

I know #RichardThompson should be high on my list but I just don't enjoy his voice/songs. Bit too much finger in the ear.

This recent reissue on Elemental Music sounds amazing. Until now, I hadn't understood just how badly I needed this on vinyl. Every song is etched in my brain, yet it sounds so new.

Today’s listening is ‘First Light’, the 1978 album by Richard and Linda Thompson.

After a couple of years away from the music business living in a commune in Norfolk, Richard and Linda returned with this superb album.

Having perhaps a slightly more commercial sound than their previous albums, it’s a great listen which really highlights Linda’s wonderful voice.
In particular the track ‘Pavanne’ has to be one of her best recorded performances!

Today’s listening is ‘Mirror Blue’, the 1994 album by Richard Thompson.

An excellent album from Mr T, though as it was produced by Mitchell Froom it does have that distinctive ‘Froom-ish’ soundscape, which you either like or you don’t.

The stand-out track has to be ‘Beeswing’, which is one of RT’s very best songs.
The subject of this song is the English folk singer Anne Briggs who was a contemporary of Thompson in the late 1960’s London folk scene.

Today’s listening is ‘Hand Of Kindness’, the 1983 album by Richard Thompson.

Finding himself ‘solo’ once again after separating from his wife Linda, RT teamed up with some old friends, including several of his old Fairport Convention pals (Nicol, Pegg & Mattacks) to produce a strong set of songs, including favourites such as ‘Tear Stained Letter’ and ‘Hand Of Kindness’.

Note that RT's hair loss has not yet reached the critical 'must wear a hat' level.

3 songs - Pink Cadillac #BruceSpringsteen, Little Red Corvette #Prince, & Delorean Dynamite #ToddTerje - are about cars/have a car in the title.

The odd one out was 1952 Vincent Black Lightning #RichardThompson which is a great song about a glorious motorbike.

There was an alternative link, 3 songs having colours but I gave an early heads up it wasn't a colour link theme. 52% guessed correctly.

Today’s listening is ‘Small Town Romance (Live/Solo in New York)', the 1984 album by Richard Thompson.

This solo, acoustic, live album was recorded in 1982 at 2 locations in New York-the Bottom Line and at Folk City.

This album contains a good selection from RT’s output up to that time, plus one old Fairport-era tune.

For me, the song ‘Small Town Romance’ itself captures so well what it is like to grow up in a small town, and then to escape!

Today’s listening is ‘Amnesia’, the 1988 album by Richard Thompson.
As well as being one of the world’s great guitarists, RT is also a fantastic song-writer with a wonderful, rich, singing voice.
This is a very strong album, full of witty and barbed lyrics (see ‘Turning of the Tide’) and has one of the great sad love songs in ‘Waltzing’s for Dreamers’.
Note at this point RT had not yet turned to beret-wearing to disguise his thinning hairline!
